About Jessica

I graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2011 with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education. I spent time working part time at a top middle school in the area working as a Language Arts Interventionist. Basically, I worked with students who were struggling in English and Language Arts to help them achieve a higher reading comprehension and understanding, help with understanding and grasping the English language, as well as giving confidence needed that would show in an increase test scores.
Following that part time work, I started working full time teaching 7th grade English and Language Arts. I worked in this position for 2 and a half years. While I have multiple years' experience with 7th grade, I student taught and tutored with students in high school as well.
I currently teach 9th grade English at a school in DeSoto County. I thoroughly enjoy teaching on the high school level. I love analyzing texts with my students. I've taught my students to be confident readers and writers through positive reinforcement and LOTS of practice. I'm a huge fan of using mnemonics and feel that one is never to old to use them!
I love English and reading. Throughout my experience teaching, I've had some difficult situations which had forced me to become creative in how and what I taught. I am confident that I can make learning fun for any student, or at least interesting enough to grasp concepts such as Subject-Verb Agreement to improve writing and speaking skills, or different text structures to improve reading comprehension.
I have a teaching certificate in the state of Mississippi, a provisional license in the state of Illinois, and a license to teach English in the United Kingdom.
Please contact me for any further information or with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you and to helping you achieve success in English and Language Arts!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
