About John

Currently I am a Master's student and graduate teaching assistant at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, teaching freshman rhetoric and composition and studying linguistics, language acquisition, and approaches to pedagogy.

Since 2009 I have worked as a tutor, workshop leader, volunteer, lecturer, and private language instructor. I teach and tutor in English using a communicative, dynamic, fun approach in which the student or students guide the instruction. Listening to a student's needs, I shape the curriculum accordingly to emphasize progress in speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary acquisition.

I have taught at the Latin American Association in Atlanta, at a teachers syndicate, private college, and language institute in Popayan, Cauca, Colombia, and among Lithuanian land and special forces as director of instruction with the U.S. Army Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency program (CULP). I have also served the CULP program in Cape Verde and Thailand. I am conversational in Spanish.

My certification is in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from the TEFL Institute, Chicago. I hold a Master's degree in international communications from Columbia University, New York, and a Bachelor's degree in political science and English from Duke University, Durham, NC.

In addition to my teaching work, I am a professional writer and academic editor and a former nighttime editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. From 2003-2010 I published a web site that chronicles the intersection between world football (soccer) and daily life, and published a compilation of soccer literature with University of Nebraska Press. I have published on soccer with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New York Times, So Foot (Paris), When Saturday Comes (London), World Literature Today, and other venues.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I minored in English at Duke University and, following graduation, worked as a staff writer at four daily newspapers, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. My writing has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, and specialty magazines related to world soccer.

ESL/ESOL

I'm entering the second year as an MA TESOL student at Northern Illinois University, having worked as a one-on-one ESL teacher, lecturer, teacher trainer, and guest teacher in Irving, Texas; Atlanta; Popayan, Colombia; Nakhon Nayok, Thailand; Mindelo, Cape Verde; and Klaipeda, Lithuania. From 2011-15, I taught all levels, beginner to high intermediate, at the Latin American Association in Atlanta and in Norcross, Georgia. My approach is communicative, dynamic, and fun, with students' needs guiding my presentation. In Colombia, I taught academic writing at a private language institute; I have additional academic ESL teaching experience at ELS Language Centers at Southern Polytechnic University in Marietta, Georgia, Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Grammar

Since 2011 I have taught grammar at all levels, beginner to high intermediate, at the Latin American Association in Atlanta. I have consistently taught grammar in context as part of a holistic approach to language acquisition. As an academic editor I apply grammar skills in shaping manuscripts to accord with Chicago, MLA, APA, and Turabian guidelines. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Literature

I minored in English at Duke University and have studied English, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, and Russian literature. My writing has been published in World Literature Today; one essay, in 2010, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, one of the top awards for small presses. I have worked as a one-on-one teacher, lecturer, workshop leader, and guest teacher in Irving, Texas, in Atlanta, in Colombia, and in Lithuania. In addition to an undergraduate degree from Duke, I also have a master's from Columbia in New York.

Proofreading

I have spent more than 15 years as an academic editor, editing book manuscripts and journal articles to accord with University of Chicago style guidelines. This work has been for Fortress Press, Orbis Books, the Society of Biblical Literature, the University of Nebraska, and an assortment of academic publishers. I also have familiarity with Turabian and MLA style and proofreading standards. Proofreading has been part of my skill set since working for daily newspapers in the 1980s. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Reading

At ELS Language Centers in Marietta in 2013 I taught two courses in developing reading skills and comprehension. Since 2011 I have taught all levels, beginner to high intermediate, at the Latin American Association in Atlanta. Reading practice is a key component of the instruction. I supply students with additional learning tools and can readily adapt these tools and methods for those wishing to boost reading comprehension for SAT or TOEFL prep. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Vocabulary

I have worked as a one-on-one teacher, lecturer, teacher trainer, and guest teacher in Irving, Texas, in Atlanta, in Colombia, and in Lithuania; at ELS Language Centers in Marietta I taught two classes in vocabulary enrichment. Since 2011 I have taught all levels, beginner to high intermediate, at the Latin American Association on Buford Highway and in Norcross, Georgia. Vocabulary building is a key component of the instruction. For example, I supply students with additional learning tools via Quizlet and can easily adapt these tools and methods for those wishing to boost vocabulary for SAT or TOEFL prep. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Writing

I have written for newspapers since I was 17 with publication credits in the New York Times, Washington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and numerous other venues. My long-form writing has been published in World Literature Today and other magazines; one essay, in 2010, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, one of the top awards for small presses. I have worked as a one-on-one teacher, lecturer, workshop leader, and guest teacher in Irving, Texas, in Atlanta, in Colombia, and in Lithuania. In Colombia I taught academic writing at a private language institute. My academic degrees are from Duke and Columbia (New York).

Wonderful tutor!

We were very fortunate to have John T. as our son's tutor. Our son learned so much and was taught great study habits. He learned many ways on how to study for upcoming quizzes and tests. I can't thank John enough with teaching our son and getting him caught up with writing and vocabulary. I highly recommend him for any child who needs help in English, writing, and or vocabulary!!
