Currently I am a Master's student and graduate teaching assistant at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, teaching freshman rhetoric and composition and studying linguistics, language acquisition, and approaches to pedagogy.

Since 2009 I have worked as a tutor, workshop leader, volunteer, lecturer, and private language instructor. I teach and tutor in English using a communicative, dynamic, fun approach in which the student or students guide the instruction. Listening to a student's needs, I shape the curriculum accordingly to emphasize progress in speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary acquisition.

I have taught at the Latin American Association in Atlanta, at a teachers syndicate, private college, and language institute in Popayan, Cauca, Colombia, and among Lithuanian land and special forces as director of instruction with the U.S. Army Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency program (CULP). I have also served the CULP program in Cape Verde and Thailand. I am conversational in Spanish.

My certification is in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from the TEFL Institute, Chicago. I hold a Master's degree in international communications from Columbia University, New York, and a Bachelor's degree in political science and English from Duke University, Durham, NC.

In addition to my teaching work, I am a professional writer and academic editor and a former nighttime editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. From 2003-2010 I published a web site that chronicles the intersection between world football (soccer) and daily life, and published a compilation of soccer literature with University of Nebraska Press. I have published on soccer with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New York Times, So Foot (Paris), When Saturday Comes (London), World Literature Today, and other venues.

Great lesson!

We discussed some prefixes and suffixes and how these can help in creating words, also we worked on two articles that John sent to me earlier.

Great tutor

John is very patient, experienced and prepared for the each lesson. On the first lesson day, he did an assessment test with my son and found out where my son is strong and weak at and told me what he will be more focused on. He was always on time. He always confirmed his appointments. And what I really like is that he sent me a detailed summary of "what we covered" after each lesson. He was very prompt to respond to email also.

Awesome

Got put into terms I was able to grasp. I learned more in 1 hour with John than 4 weeks in my senior thesis class. Built my confidence for me to continue. So relieved!!

Above and Beyond

Student: John was a very enjoyable tutor to have. He went past my expectations and helped me to improve my writing skills. John helped me with a school research paper by giving me tips on how to organize my thoughts and brought me resource materials for it as well. Overall, he was a joy to work with and I'd be glad to recommend him to anyone that is looking for help with their writing skills. He did word association and helped me understand how to organize my thoughts on paper. Parent: John took the extra mile with providing resources for my son. He was always on time. He always confirmed his appointments and after each study lesson he sent me a summary of the study session. He was very prompt to respond to email and he was just a pleasure to have has a tutor. My son is mostly done with school semester but its a good chance we will use John again in the future.
