About Jeanette

For the past two years, I have been working towards earning my master's degree while teaching undergraduate courses in history. I have seen how dramatically a student's grades and overall comprehension of a subject can change when given individualized, specific help in their work. Working one-on-one with my students during my office hours caused several students to go from a C or D grade to a B or an A. Diligence on a student's part is required, but it is also important that the tutor pays attention to the student's needs and wants and creates an inclusive learning environment that will best serve the student.

Primarily, my area of expertise is history of all stripes. I have studied a diverse range of historical subjects including American history, gender history, labor history, the history of the Cold War, African-American history and world history at the graduate level. I also have a working knowledge of sociology and anthropology. All of these disciplines require an attention to detail, the ability to think critically and draw one's own conclusions through research and analysis of data. Studying history has also given me the skills needed to tutor in English and composition and the ability to accurately proof-read and edit papers of all subjects.

Having gone through the rigorous process of applying for numerous universities, I am also able to tutor for standardized testing such as then SAT, ACT, and GRE. A set yet diverse study schedule is the best way to prepare for these tests, and I am confident that by offering a challenging yet nurturing environment for test preparation is the best way to ensure a student's success.

I seek to tutor in an environment that challenges and is structured, but is tailored to individual growth and experimentation. Asking small and large questions, engaging the student's mind directly, and allowing for freedom of thought is important when studying the humanities and I aim to provide an environment where a student can feel free to explore. I am always willing to listen to a student when it comes to assessing their needs and seek to ensure they receive the best possible academic care.

I am able to travel to tutor in a student's home, at a library near to the student or another convenient location, and am able to offer private lessons in my own home. I do require at least three hours notice before an appointment if a cancellation is required.

I love to teach and find it to be my true life's passion. I do so hope that I can take part in the education of more student's so we can grow and learn together.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
