After graduating from the University of Chicago, I went on to get my teaching certification, which I have used to teach public elementary and junior high students and also to homeschool all five of my children. Four out of the five are either in college or have graduated, each having maintained higher than a 3.5 GPA. All of my children are strong readers.
I use a variety of methods to tutor, depending on the needs and learning style of the student. If I were to tutor your child in reading I would use a reading inventory to pinpoint specific areas of difficulty and then work on strengthening his or her skills in those areas. I would also incorporate your child's own school work in the tutoring sessions to make the sessions practical.
I also tutor adults using the informal reading inventory to identify trouble areas and then tutor accordingly. Sometimes, a missed but retaught skill can be the piece of the puzzle that brings the "reading picture" into focus for an adult learner.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a K-9 certification in the state of Illinois, where I worked as a 7th grade teacher as well as a substitute teacher for all elementary grades. I continued teaching elementary school students - including my own five children - for 16 years. While homeschooling my children, I have also served as a teacher in several homeschool cooperatives. Each of my children have gone on to do very well in high school and college, maintaining a GPA of 3.4 or higher.
I am certified in ESL/ESOL based on my training in elementary education and on my experience working with foreign-born people. The PHONICS FOR READING AND SPELLING program introduces each of the single-letter and multi-letter English phonograms and teaches students how to recognize and use them in reading and spelling.
While I would incorporate this method in my tutoring, I would also use the materials provided by the student's school and try to reinforce the method already being taught to the student.
Learning to read is a rewarding discovery experience when the student is given the proper tools and attention. When I tutor a student in reading, I first diagnose reading problems using the Informal Reading Inventory in order to pinpoint the exact skills needing improvement. I can then concentrate on those areas to make the best use of tutoring time. In addition, I also try to incorporate materials used by the student in school in order to make the instruction practical for the student.
Students can view school as something fun and interesting, or as drudgery, depending on the skills they bring to the task of learning. In my teaching, I like to equip my students with the tools needed to master the work before them. Whether it be giving them tips for reading more effectively, remembering what is being read, note-taking, or test-taking, I try to first assess what the need is and then give it to the student. I also take into account a student's learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) when adding to his/her "study skill toolbox."
Effective writing is an important tool which can enable a writer to communicate exactly what he or she thinks, feels, or understands. Without the proper writing skills, ideas are held captive within our minds. In my writing instruction, I seek help the writer to find just the right words to "release" those ideas in a way that will be best understood by the reader. This means helping the student know the most effective ways to write the kind of piece attempted (i.e. narrative, persuasive, expository, creative, etc.), as well as challenging him/her to search for the most descriptive vocabulary to communicate key thoughts. ecause a working understanding of basic grammar is also necessary for good writing, I reinforce any weak grammar skills that come up.
