About Heather

I am an experienced tutor and mother. I enjoy teaching all ages but private tutoring excites me because I enjoy getting to the aha! moment with students. I am a teacher-directed, student-led tutor with high standards. I come prepared to stay on task but I'm sensitive to student progress. My illustrations and explanations are clear, vivid, and creative. Each concept is explained a minimum of three times with students gradually participating in the explanation. When a student can teach the concept, mastery is near!

Outside of the classroom, I have many interests. I am married with two children. I enjoy campfires and gooey S'mores. Spending a day relaxing on the beach brings our family together for carefree connection. I thrive on routine and have created systems within my home to keep organized. Healthy home-cooked meals are a part of everyday life: homegrown salads, homemade bread, and home-style cooking.

I have taught multi-grade language arts at both elementary, middle, and high school levels. When my students master seven simple writing methods, their English grades and test scores improve. I specialize in biblical and American literature. I can teach basic Latin and Greek roots to help unlock mysterious vocabulary words. My love for grammar is only surpassed by my love for words. I currently write and teach Bible studies. I have taught hermeneutics and homiletic speaking. My experience in public speaking includes adults, children, and teens. I can share my secrets of audience engagement.

I have been working as a reading group assistant and creative writing parent coach at our elementary school for the past 5 years. I have worked well with both boys and girls. My questions improve student writing and my patient instruction draws out struggling readers.

I have taught phonics in the classroom and have taught my own children to read. They entered kindergarten reading at a 3rd grade level. I have 7 undergraduate hours in literacy education.

I enjoy connecting history, literature and geography and exploring how geography affects culture. The literature of a time period reflects what was happening historically. I have been teaching religion for 15+ years in the church setting.

I actually graduated with two high school diplomas. My first one was the standard college prep diploma and my second one was in piano. To receive this diploma, I had to have extensive training in the various periods of music and study major composers from each. I studied for 12 years, with 8 years under a Julliard graduate. I entered the Concerto competition. I have taught piano for 4 years. In the past, I have played at weddings and church services. I am currently involved in teaching piano and playing regularly for the extra-curricular chorus at the elementary school.

Feeling stuck in your education can be so overwhelming. A tutor is a patient friend who can guide you from frustration to independence and confidence. With everything I teach, I find something to learn, and I share that with you. I encourage you to try me out for six weeks to see if we are a good fit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have actively tutored math for many years. My hands on approach to algebra helps students understand how to isolate variables and solve the problem.

American History

I am currently tutoring an American Lit/History combo class.

Bible Studies

I have 30 hours toward a Master's of Divinity degree. My coursework includes Old and New Testament Survey, Acts, Romans, World Missions, and Hermeneutics. I am the Director of Women's Ministries at the Evangelical Free Church of Crystal Lake. I have over 120 women enrolled in midweek Bible studies. I train my students to ask questions and formulate interpretations that are biblically sound and culturally relevant. I mentor women in practical theology on a regular basis.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BSEd in Elementary Education grades 1-8. I have a concentration in middle school grades. I have work experience in early childhood education. I have taught my children how to read and work with recovering readers in my children's classrooms.

English

I taught junior high and high school English for one year; then we moved. I have had over five years of private tutoring experience. One of my recent clients immediately was able to use and apply the five paragraph essay model. This client received a very high score on this assignment.

Literature

I am currently tutoring an American Lit-History combo class as well as an AP Language and Composition class. American Literature is my favorite!

Music History

To receive my second high school diploma in music, I had to master and memorize ten different piano pieces from the different musical eras including Baroque, Romantic, Modern, and Contemporary. I was required to be able to identify major works from major composers. I still have all the resources needed to expose a student to these essential concepts.

Music Theory

I studied under a Julliard trained private instructor from 1979-1989. Under her leadership, I received a second high school diploma in music. I have taught piano since 2002. Part of learning the music is understanding notes, symbols, and how it is all put together. Understanding the theory unlocks the music.

Phonics

I have a degree in Elementary Education. I have spent countless hours working with lower readers in the school setting. I have taught my own children to read using "100 easy lessons" and Leap Frog materials to help them read quickly.

Reading

I have had 9hrs college level classes on how to teach reading plus the equivalent of 6 years class room experience.

Religion

I have been on staff at 3 churches and have taught religious education and church history to different age groups. I have attended seminary. I have memorized extensive sections of the Holy Bible.

Study Skills

I connect lesson objectives from the text or teacher's notes to questions that will be on the test. I have written my own tests as a teacher, and I am able to predict what material will be on the tests. I have taught multi-grade language arts at both elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Writing

I am currently working with AP level students as well as elementary and middle school students. I have taught various levels of high school English and I enjoy working one on one with students. I have been trained in the Oxford method for teaching writing to all grade levels.
