Johns Hopkins University (Molecular and Cellular Biology)
Johns Hopkins University (Spring 2017) (Master's)
(Current) University of Illinois College of Medicine (MD)
I attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in music. I graduated in 3 years, and then I remained at Hopkins to complete a master's degree in Molecular Biology. Before college, I attended the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) in Aurora, IL. I scored a 36 on my June 2012 ACT, and more recently scored in the 96th percentile on my MCAT.
I tutor ACT/SAT as well as most school subjects, and I am very comfortable working with students. I always stress understanding the core concepts rather than just learning "how to pass the test," so that students are able to tackle difficult and unfamiliar problems. Frequently, I will ask students to answer questions of my own, rather than just problems from a textbook, to help them understand a certain concept. Furthermore, as someone who has recently taken these subjects and standardized tests, I relate well with students and always let them know what worked for me when I was in their shoes.
I am an Eagle Scout, and working with younger scouts - whether it was teaching them first aid or how to tie knots - has helped me become a better teacher and has given me the patience to explain concepts to others. During high school, I was a writing tutor and frequently helped my peers with their assignments, from chemistry to math to biology. At Hopkins, I was a teaching assistant for statistics, general biology, and biochemistry.
Outside of classes, I enjoyed researching in one of Hopkins' biology labs, giving tours on campus, and running the Hopkins Cricket Club. I also play the piano, guitar, and drums, and I directed one of Hopkins' a cappella groups.
I tutor both on the JHU Homewood Campus and in the Chicago area, depending on my current location. Please feel free to send me any questions you may have while trying to find a good tutoring fit. Arjun has been a very helpful tutor to me for the few sessions that we had. He printed out an extra copy of whatever I was doing and followed along to see how I thought things out. Even if I got the question right he would still ask me how I did it to make sure I didn't just guess but so I understood the concept thoroughly.
A Very helpful tutoring session for my study proposal development and personal statement construction. Arjun was very patient and provided good suggestions for my future writing.
Arjun met with my son, Ethan, for SAT preparation with little over than 10 days of strict study preparation. He provided structure and specific details on what to focus on, instead of just discussing anything that comes in mind. He always comes prepared. Pressed for time, Arjun's technique in teaching is straightforward. He targets specific mathematical components that will help Ethan improve his SAT score. His experience in taking several standardized testings is a huge help particularly on how to address and respond to questions accurately. The ability of analyzing a mathematical question in a different way, has enabled Ethan to deal with difficult problems that were a challenge to him in the past. It certainly is beneficial to have a tutor who knows what he's talking and is passionate about it. Thank you, Arjun. Ethan will be meeting with him again for few more sessions!
I learned strategies for the practice math problems that was given to me by my tutor, and the strategies helped. Thanks so much.
My daughter had a helpful session with Arjun for calculus. He was patient in explaining and worked hard to help her figure out difficult problems.
Arjun is very patient and humble, eager to help, and wants to see the student success. Thank God for him.
Arjun is an excellent teacher. He is a very organized and easy to understand. My daughter felt very comfortable getting all the lessons from him and she thinks his lessons will help her greatly.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing musical instruments for about 15 years: Piano (15), Singing (8), Percussion (4), and Guitar (3).
As a music minor, I have taken 4 formal music theory and music history courses, and I plan to continue them over my undergraduate career. A significant portion of these classes is being able to compose music and write parts. I also have arranged music for several instruments and for the a cappella group, which I am director of. Lastly, I compose and arrange music on my own time. Through all of these, I have a wide variety of experience in composing several genres of music, from classical to pop music.
I have been playing musical instruments for about 15 years:
I learned piano via the Suzuki method, which emphasizes ear training instead of sight reading. I have near-perfect and excellent relative pitch, and can easily detect intervals and chord types.
As a music minor, I have taken 4 formal music theory and music history courses, and I plan to continue them over my undergraduate career. Listening to music is essential to all of those classes. I also direct an a cappella group, which involves listening for blending and pitch accuracy.
