About Michelle

I am a highly motivated and enthusiastic online tutor with a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching. I have a passion for helping students of all ages and abilities achieve their academic goals. My background includes curriculum planning and development, assessment of learning styles, innovative lesson designs, and I have been extremely successful in motivating students who, at the beginning, showed a general disregard and disinterest in the subject area. I am knowledgeable in most general education subjects, K-12, and have designed and facilitated several courses in English Composition, Literature, and the Visual Arts at the undergraduate level. I believe that learning is a life-long process, and I am dedicated to helping students realize their potential to achieve greatness.

While my initial goals in the field of Education included curriculum assessment, course design, and program development, I found that providing public school learners with a private school-type learning experience (personalized attention)to be both personally fulfilling, and beneficial for each student I work with. My tutoring methods are not based on a generic curriculum. Instead, they utilize the school district curriculum and actual class assignments that each student is learning. This ensures that my tutoring remains personalized to the learner's individual needs. By using the actual tests and assignments from the classroom, it guarantees the student is learning a single, cohesive curriculum, rather than, for example, both a tutoring center's implemented curriculum, along with the learner's specific school district and/or institute of higher education's required standards.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have worked in a number of area school's writing centers, at the middle/high school levels, as well as both the undergraduate and graduate level. While preparing students for the English portion of the ACT, strong emphasis is placed on the following content:

***Usage and Mechanics***
Sentence Structure, Punctuation, Grammar and Usage

***Rhetorical Skills***
Writing Strategies and Style

My tutoring method includes an initial pre-test in order to get an idea of a student's strengths and weaknesses in regards to the content which appears on the ACT exam.

ACT Reading

My tutoring method includes an initial pre-test in order to get an idea of a student's strengths and weaknesses in regards to the content which appears on the Reading portion of the ACT. I have years of experience in ACT/SAT Test Prep, and the core concepts covered in my ACT Reading tutoring sessions include the following:

***Review of the 4 types of QUESTIONS that appear in the Reading portion of the ACT, as well as their format.***

***Review of the 4 types of PASSAGES that appear in the Reading portion of the ACT***

***Helpful tips for completing this section successfully, and general test-taking strategies.***

I have several years of experience designing online test preparation programs for the ASVAB, as well as the AF0QT.

NOTE: I am frequently asked if this is part of the ASVAB...the answer is a resounding "NO." However, its understandable when a student/parent confuses the two exams. This is NOT the AFQT (four core sections of the ASVAB..

The Airforce Officer Qualifying Test includes a personalized test preparation study plan reviewing the following exam components:

Verbal Analogies
Arithmetic Reasoning
Word Knowledge
Math Knowledge
Instrument Comprehension
Block Counting
Table Reading
Aviation Information
General Science
Rotated Blocks
Hidden Figures

American History

I am a doctoral candidate (Ed.D, Curriculum and Instruction) with experience in providing supplemental instruction, and teaching assistance, in United States History, with specializations in gender studies and the African-American experience. In addition, I designed the curriculum redesign of the American Studies program currently offered in 50+ public high schools in the state of Illinois.

Art History

I earned my BA in Art History, and completed a semester completing an Independent Study which investigated the feminist elements present in the art of Japanese artist, Mariko Mori. During my time in graduate school, I spent two years designing several online courses for community education initiatives, as well as virtual high schools and online colleges/universities. These courses were developed to increase online learners' engagements with the visual arts. These courses include an integrated studies program which incorporates the arts into the Common Core Standards (both national and state). I have also personally designed and facilitated the Introduction to the Visual Arts (foundations course), Women in Art and Society, Contemporary Art, and the Art of Controversy.

I have worked with students for years in their preparation for taking the ASVAB exam and their subsequent enlistment into their chosen branch of the military. While I do I have plenty of knowledge in electronics and mechanics, my tutoring methods focus on the four core sections (AFQT):

-Arithmetic Reasoning
-Math Knowledge
-Word Knowledge
-Paragraph Comprehension

I am National Computer Science Academy certified in C++ Programming.

College Counseling

In addition to instructional design, curriculum development, and online test preparation programs, I have extensive experience in college counseling and planning.

There is NO FEE for this particular service, and is not limited to current students. I offer complimentary assistance in the creation of an Academic Road-map for any/all students who request advice and guidance (all grade levels) and work with prospective/current college-level students in designing their school's program-specific Degree Completion Plan. While an academic plan is essential for ALL learners, it is CRUCIAL and FINANCIALLY BENEFICIAL when enrolled in any tuition-based institute of higher education.

My knowledge of accredited programs/requirements spans from the local community college, to the nationwide public university and beyond. Furthermore, I enjoy helping ALL LEARNERS in selecting the most cost-effective alternatives to satisfy general education requirements.

I specialize in online test preparation and am currently working with several students who are preparing to take the GED. I

The tutoring I do takes place online, including all test preparation. I can provide a sample ACT test prep study plan to give you a better idea of how it works. ton=1

GED Test Prep content as it relates to the exam:

***Language Arts (Reading)***

Passages from fiction (75% of the exam) and non-fiction (25%). The fiction selections will include at least one from each of the following genres: poetry, drama, prose fiction before 1920, prose fiction from between 1920 and 1960, and prose fiction from after 1960. The non-fiction selections will come from two of the following genres: nonfiction prose, critical reviews of the visual or performing arts, or workplace and community documents.

***Language Arts (Writing)***

The first part of the exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions in the following areas of content: organization (15%); sentence structure (30%); usage (30%); and mechanics (25%). The second part of the Writing Test consists of an assigned essay on some familiar subject. The scores from these two parts are combined to form a single Writing score.

***Social Studies***

Geography (15%); history (US or Canada 25%, world 15%); civics and government (25%); and economics (20%)

Physics and chemistry (35%); life science (45%); and earth and space science (20%).

Number operations and number sense (20 to 30%); measurement and geometry (20 to 30%); data analysis, statistics, and probability (20 to 30%); and algebra, functions, and patterns (20 to 30%).

I charge $30.00, which covers an entire WEEK of test preparation: A typical student opts for a month-long study program, however, I have worked with several students whom, after completing an initial diagnostic quiz, have needed only a week or two to concentrate on a specific section of the GED.

I personalize each student's study plan/schedule, and provide continuous feedback throughout all stages of the test prep process...up until the examination date, if requested. I also post lesson tutorials on my web page for the areas that students seem to struggle with the most.

My method of test preparation is customized to meet each student's learning needs, and is designed to facilitate an ongoing learning process...rather than the typical "cram session."

General Computer

I have worked as an instructional designer, online course developer, and online tutor for over ten years. My specialty is educational software and learning technology.

I have completed several years of Graduate-level research in the field of educational assessment and curriculum planning. Furthermore, I have plenty of experience preparing students who plan to sit for the ISEE by helping in the fine-tuning of both verbal and quantitative reasoning for the following grade levels:

-students in grades 4-11 seeking admission to grades 5-12 in independent schools.
-grades 4-5 seeking admission to grades 5 and 6 take the Lower Level
-students in grades 6-7 seeking admission to grades 7-8 take the Middle Level
-students in grades 8-11 seeking admission to grades 9-12 take the Upper Level.

I have over a decade of experience in online test preparation, but my experience with prospective medical students has been the most interesting and personally fulfilling. The exam is multiple-choice, designed to assess the examinee's problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of scientific principles. I design every MCAT study plan to include in-depth content review of the Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and Biological Sciences.

Please feel free to send me any questions/concerns about an individual section of the MCAT, or the format and procedure regarding the exam process itself.

Physical Science

I have worked with students (K-12) by designing instructional materials and learning aides which provide learners with an alternative method of the concepts in many of the physical sciences. All study guides and activities are customized based on the student's curriculum, as well as their region's Common Core requirements.

I'm a learning specialist and certified Instructional Designer with several years of experience in the development of online test preparation study plans and have a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching.

I have experience in preparing future educators to sit for both the Praxis I (pre-professional) and Praxis II (subject-specific) examinations.

I have worked with students at all grade levels, including adults, to help develop their literacy and reading comprehension skills.

Study Skills

I am very knowledgeable in study skills, and have successfully used these skills for over a decade in my own schooling. I am also certified in basic study skills and mind-mapping. (Alison)

After completing my BA in Art History and English Literature, I went on to work as the writing center consultant at a nearby community college in Illinois. In addition, while earning my Master's degree, I worked with area high school students interested in developing their writing skills. Prior to my acceptance into my Doctoral program (Ed.D, Curriculum and Instruction), I designed and facilitated several online writing workshops, as well as providing thesis-development assistance to 20+ undergraduate students.
