Wheaton College (Music)
Life's journey has included a quest for learning. I desire to share knowledge in a variety of subject areas with those who are willing to learn. I believe in finding answers when an unresolved question is at hand. I have a strong sense for detail and accuracy.
My number one passion is music. I have been playing the piano for over three decades. I teach piano and voice to students ages 5 - 70. As a piano teacher, I delight in helping students learn the basics of playing , music theory and improving performance. As a vocal coach, I enjoy working with students who seek to improve their singing voice. I have a wide range of musical tastes and experience with various musical genres. My number two passion is fitness. I have worked with clients one-on-one as well as in group settings with children and parents.
My experience includes a variety of roles that have qualified me as a tutor, facilitator and customer service professional. In addition to music & fitness instructor roles, I served as a facilitator in an after-school program. A major role was helping children ages 6 - 17 with homework assignments on a daily basis. If children did not have homework, time was spent working on specific skills related to language arts, spelling, reading and math.
Education: a BA Degree (Music Major) from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL., a diploma in Bookeeping & Accounting and a diploma in Fitness and Nutrition.
Certification: Certified Personal Trainer through American Council On Exercise (ACE)since 2004.
My approach to tutoring is based on the student's needs and goals. I have found that meeting needs starts with identification of lack, shortage or just filling in pieces of the (education) puzzle that may have been missed along the way. It is also important to know what kind of "learner" the student is. A goal of mine as a tutor is to keep the student motivated with praise, encouragement and occasional rewards and incentives. Once needs have been addressed, goals can be set for improvement. I believe learning is progressive. It happens one layer or lesson at a time along with consistent repetition.
What are your needs and/or goals? Perhaps you're not really sure yet. I'd love to help you in your quest for learning! Life's journey has included a quest for learning. Learning piano, at the right pace, with patience and encouragement! Had an amazing session, fun and refreshing and educational! Learning the basics and moving along at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a diploma in Fitness and Nutrition attained from Harcourt Learning Direct in 1999.In 2004, after study and testing, I became certified as a Personal Trainer (Fitness).
I worked as a trainer for Crunch Fitness, Chgo in 2006 and for LA Fitness, Tinley Park in 2009. As a trainer, I created exercise routines for individuals and instruction on proper form and use of equipment.
I worked in an after-school program as a health promotion coordinator which included facilitating classes in nutrition, exercise and some outdoor sports activities. I also held a core training class for parents and children at a local library for 8 weeks.
Last but not least, I love motivating young and old to "move more" and become physically active.
I graduated from Wheaton College in 1982 as a music major. The piano was my area of concentration.
I currently teach beginning to intermediate piano lessons in my home studio. I have grown fond of Alfred's method series. I also use John Thompson's for students who have more interest in playing classical music.
Aside from my home base, I also teach piano at a local music store.
Playing the piano is my number one passion. I consider it a delight to help students grow in their learning of the piano.
