Winona State univ. (Speech-Theatre)
I'm a curious guy and I'm an enthusiastic guy. My students hopefully catch both "afflictions" while I work with them. I've got more than 20 years teaching experience in non-formal settings like museums and outdoor venues. My showbiz resume includes dozens of television credits and lots of stage work with reputable Chicago companies. All of this from my degrees in teaching communications.
The subjects I handle are Speech (writing & delivering), Theatre (acting & writing), American History (an extension of my day job), and Math (This is the Left brain use of my college minor). My methods are simple: Relax about the challenge, Relate to the Individual, and Restore confidence through practice & participation.
As long as you're willing to pursue your goal or master the 'obstacle', I'm there for you. Motivation is something you bring to the table, I'm just there to build it and help apply it. I believe I offer you a humorous way of doing things too, because all work and no play makes Jack really tired.
My day job is all about K-6 students. The lessons I provide during the year include simple counting & multiplication to household budget creation (all in a historical context). Spelling just comes naturally, I guess.
I have more than a decade at my present job sharing 18th century events in North America, several writing projects involving 19th century railroad and Civil War personalities, and I'm a World War II buff in my spare time.
I have nearly 100 play productions under my belt--Most as actor, quite a few as director, and several as Playwright. I've done all genres (childrens theatre, dinner theatre, summer stock, Improv, and theme park) of theatre.
I like making converts; whether it's new public speakers, aspiring actors, or mathletes, I hope my enthusiasm is the fuel to get folks excited about working and succeeding.
Looking forward to your successes! All of this
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I love reading. I tackle all genres--mystery, history, sci-fi, biography, and satire--and have done so for all my adult life.
I'm often asked to edit or proofread peers' scripts and stories, and love the challenge of making someone's lit the best it can be.
Often, the testing challenges are finding the desired 'nuggets' or answers. A well-structured piece makes that easier than you think.
I'm a very left-brain person in real-life though I spend a lot of time doing creative work. A math minor when I came through college, I've worked with elementary age kids for most of my life. The creative side comes through when the textbook logic doesn't fit student perceptions.
My initial college degree was a B.S. in high school level Speech (research, writing, delivery). During my college career, I won dozens of forensics awards including national recognition for Informative speeches as well as Humorous/After-dinner speeches. Lately, I've gotten a bit of practice doing emcee work for regional storytelling festivals and non-profit groups.
I've been performing on stage since the 1970s. My resume includes work I've produced, a solid tenure at Walt Disney World, but mostly Chicago theatre roles. Doing solo story work, I've been acclaimed at several midwestern Fringe Festivals of late.
I've been actor/director/writer for a local murder-mystery company for nearly 20 years. Perpetually recruiting, this is where I get to lead and mentor people of all experience levels to get 'up to snuff' for our commercial ventures.
