Don't let math or computer science be intimidating! My name is Mike, and I have a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. While attending the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, I worked as a math tutor in the Office of Minority Student Affairs, where the classes that I tutored ranged from introductory college-level to advanced undergraduate classes, in both individual and small group instruction. During college and graduate school, I also took numerous computer science classes - all of this led to my career (fourteen years) as a software engineer in the financial industry. I also currently work as a math instructor at a college.

My philosophy on tutoring (and teaching) has always been to know your audience. By knowing your audience well, you can put yourself in the shoes of the person(s) that you are tutoring, and understand their needs better. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the individual that I am tutoring, I can tailor the material specifically to them, and present it in as clear and easy to understand manner as possible. This approach has also helped me become successful at training people at work on complex computer systems.

I also do work on the side as a "semi-professional" musician (trumpet) in the Chicagoland area, so I am available for tutoring music theory, trumpet (and other brass instruments), and piano.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

C,

C

I have been working as a software engineer in the financial industry for the last fourteen years, and the systems that I have worked on have been built exclusively with the C and C++ programming languages (both of these languages are closely related to one another). These two languages have been the focus of my career thus far. At the various companies that I have worked for, I have also trained new employees on these systems. Including the years spent in college and graduate school and my corporate experience working with these languages, I have spent a long time learning and working with them, and can tutor anyone at any level.

Computer Engineering

I have been working as a software engineer in the financial industry for the last fourteen years. Throughout this time, I have gained experience in all areas of the full software development life-cycle (SDLC) (gathering of requirements, design, documentation, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance), all of which are key aspects of software engineering. I have also trained new employees on the complex systems that I have worked on at the various companies during my career.
Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

I have had numerous computer programming/computer science classes both as an aerospace engineering major as an undergrad and as a graduate student in applied mathematics. This eventually led to a career as a software engineer in the financial industry for the last fourteen years. I have also trained new employees on the systems that I have worked on at the various companies throughout my career.

DOS,

DOS

I have worked as a software engineer in the financial industry for the past fourteen years. The majority of that time has been spent on systems using the Microsoft Windows/DOS operating system. I also have trained new employees on the complex systems that I have worked on, which were built for this operating system. Utilizing my experience from my career and courses that I took in college and graduate school, I am capable of tutoring anyone at any level on this operating system (beginners included and welcome!).
Mathematica,

Mathematica

I was first exposed to Mathematica as an aerospace engineering undergrad student at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, where this software package was very prevalent on campus (due to its creator, Wolfram Research, being located in Champaign, IL). After working with both Mathematica's built-in functionality as well using it as a programming language, I realized how powerful it really is, and made it an integral part of my undergraduate and graduate degree (applied mathematics) programs.
Microsoft Access,

Microsoft Access

I have been working as a software engineer in the financial industry for the last fourteen years. Throughout this time (as well as during college), I have spent a considerable amount of time studying database theory and working with databases of all kinds, including Microsoft Access. As a result, I am available to tutor this software package for anyone looking for more help with it.

Calculus,

Calculus

As an undergrad engineering major as well as a graduate applied mathematics major, I had to take practically every existing calculus course (and did well in all of them). These included calculus 1, calculus 2, calculus 3, differential equations, advanced calculus, applied differential equations, and partial differential equations.
Piano,

Piano

I have been involved in music for over thirty years, and currently do side work as a "semi-professional" musician (trumpet) in the Chicagoland area. As a young music student, I took keyboard lessons for eight years, and realized the benefit of having a background in piano and how much it helps your understanding and ability on other instruments as well. I believe that a piano foundation is a big asset to any musician, and my experience with keyboards of all types continues to this day. I am available for piano tutoring for beginning to intermediate students of all ages.

I have a bachelor's degree in engineering (aerospace) and a master's degree in applied mathematics - two fields where linear algebra is important. I studied and used this subject for both of these degrees. In graduate school, I also studied the use of computer programming to solve problems in linear algebra. Knowledgeable and helpful

Mike was very helpful and thorough in going over the study guide material my son is currently working on. We look forward to working with Mike to improve my son’s pre-calc grade.

Big improvement in grades

Mike has tutored my son in Algebra 2 Trig for the past 4 months. As a result, he's developed confidence in the material and improved his grade from struggling to A's. I'm very pleased.

Mike is awesome.

Knowledgeable and patient. We use Mike for AP Calculus and Physics. Great guy. Willing to travel and meet at local library; responds to texts between sessions with additional help. No complaints. Thanks Mike!

Knowledgeable Educator

He explained concepts and broke equations down where my learning style was accommodated. Also showed me ways to simply problems without using long draw out methods. Looking forward to my class knowing I have a great tutor!

BEST Tutor We've Every Had

We are so thankful to have found Mike! He is an excellent teacher with experience and extensive knowledge in math. He explains all concepts with patience and clarity. My children enjoy working with him and never complain about doing math which they always did with me ;) We would, without reservation refer Mike to anyone who wants to see their children gain confidence and increase their math ability. In addition, Mike is able to connect with my children on a personal level. He is interested in their individual interests and goals. Anyone who hires Mike would be very lucky!

Willing to Find Weaknesses

I like that Mike is rewinding my son to see why he struggled in algebra 2 before pre-calculus. So stepping into pre-calc will not be so overwhelming.

Michelle, 5 lessons with Mike

Very detailed.

When going through each lesson, Mike makes sure to take each step (even the baby steps that could be skipped) just to make sure I understand how the problems are solved. He even shows multiple ways to get the equation, not just one preferred method. Which I love. If I don't understand how an equation is solved, he goes into greater detail and even does additional problems. Definitely a great tutor!!
