Since I started as a math tutor in college, I've been teaching in one form or another for over seven years. Even now, I still cherish the moment when I see the light go on above a student's head. I graduated summa cum laude from DePaul with a B.S. in Mathematics and Philosophy. After some time away, I came to miss education and went back for my Ph.D. in Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. Along the way, I took the GRE, scoring 168 verbal and 164 quant, became a teaching assistant, and finally an award-winning full college-level instructor. For the past three years, I have been teaching philosophy, writing, and logic at Vanderbilt in small, personalized classes, as well as online. I have, in all, over two years of experience tutoring math, two years as a teaching assistant in upper-division college courses, and three years as a college instructor-of-record. My philosophy courses have been designed to meet Vanderbilt's "writing-intensive" designation. This means that, in addition to helping students understand course material, I also give extensive feedback on their writing.

My approach to personal tutoring always begins with understanding. The first lesson I learned as a math tutor at DePaul was that, although necessary, memorization of rules and facts is never sufficient on its own. The typical tutoring experience for me was a student coming in with a difficult problem, rummaging around in their toolkit of formulas, but never knowing which one to pull out. The value of personal tutoring lies in having someone help you unlock what you already know, by slowing down your thinking so you can make connections between concepts. My expertise in teaching and tutoring college-level math, logic, and writing is perfectly suited to the skills covered by the GRE.

I hope to hear from you soon. Regardless of the subject, we will work together to develop a lesson plan and target areas of concern or weakness.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have! I will always respond as quickly as possible.

GRE,

GRE

I tutored math for over two years while I earned my Bachelor's degree in mathematics from DePaul University. Before applying to grad school, I took studied for and took the GRE, scoring 168 on the verbal and 164 on the quantitative component. As an instructor at Vanderbilt, I frequently teach General Logic, which includes extensive study of formal logical methods. These methods are the foundation of mathematical thinking, especially for higher-level areas requiring proofs and discrete mathematics.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have taught at the college level for over three years, requiring the ability to deliver lectures, use PowerPoints, and lead group discussions. I also frequently present and defend my research to a live audience at professional conferences, including at the American Philosophical Association. Presenting research means confronting a sometimes hostile audience of experts, seeking to poke holes in your arguments. I share techniques for effective public speaking and for dealing with difficult audiences.

Writing

As a philosopher and philosophy teacher, written and verbal communication are my main occupation. I have taught philosophy for three years with a focus on developing college-level writing skills. I have read and work-shopped hundreds if not thousands of pages of student writing and have seen unsure students mature into confident essay writers.

Philosophy

Philosophy

I defended my dissertation in philosophy in 2020, which focused on environmental philosophy, Kant, and the Ancient Greeks. I have an active research profile as a philosopher and publish peer-reviewed journal articles and invited essays. My specializations lie in ethics, environmental studies, Classical German, and Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. However, my teaching competence extends beyond these areas, and I have taught units on metaphysics, logic, political philosophy, Modern Philosophy, and Continental Philosophy. Even if you are struggling to understand a text or topic I have not directly taught or written on, I am always eager to learn new subdomains, and will work through any reading with you one-on-one.

Great communicator!

Fiacha made multiple topics make sense in a very short amount of time. Definitely recommend if you need philosophy help!

Josh, 1 lesson with Fiacha

10/10 recommend

Fiacha went out of his way to help me study for the GRE with real test questions. I strongly feel that he helped me come up with better strategies to take the test. 10/10 recommend!

Jenna, 2 lessons with Fiacha

Very knowledgable!

Was patient and explained all concepts very well! Helped me work through understanding the concept rather than just talking and teaching AT me. Obviously had a very clear and deep understanding of the topic I needed help with.

Kamilla, 1 lesson with Fiacha

Super patient, informative and helpful.

Fiacha helped me to better understand truth tables, classifying propositions, and determining their validity. He did an excellent job of clearly explaining each step and provided further context in our discussions. I would highly recommend Fiacha for any propositional logic needs, and I will definitely be scheduling another appointment.
