Hello! My name is Laurel, and I'm currently working on my masters in biostatistics at Northwestern. I studied pure mathematics at DePaul University prior to beginning at Northwestern. Throughout college, I worked in my university's writing center as a peer writing tutor, where I had the opportunity to work with a variety of writers across different academic contexts. I have also worked consistently as a mathematics tutor, with a primary focus in middle school level to high school level mathematics including Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics. In total, I have close to seven years of tutoring experience, with my primary subjects including writing/English and mathematics (including statistics).
My favorite part about tutoring is that I learn a lot from the students I work with. It is always interesting to see how people conceptualize problems, especially math problems, so I enjoy learning different methods of thinking while tutoring. In turn, this helps me broaden my own mathematical understanding which only improves my general knowledge of the subject. In math tutoring as well, I enjoy helping students to understand beyond the problem itself, since I am now working on a graduate degree that applies concepts to the medical realm. In writing tutoring, I always find myself learning about new topics that I would have never otherwise discovered, as people often choose to write about topics that are interesting to them.
Having completed my bachelor's degree in pure mathematics, I have a broad understanding of fundamental math concepts as well as how they will be important in higher level mathematical learning. Further, I am currently a graduate student in biostatistics, so on a daily basis I myself am working with mathematical concepts. I have also tutored several students in high school math classes both when I was in high school and during my undergraduate education, so I am experienced at teaching these subjects.
I would love to get into contact with you to schedule tutoring and see if we are a good match! Do not hesitate to reach out.
