Hello! My name is Bill, and I'm a licensed educator with nine years of experience working in elementary schools. I have a master's degree in teaching and a bachelor's in art; my license is for elementary education, with endorsements in art and ESL instruction. For the past seven years, I was a fourth grade teacher and guided my students in daily explorations of math, language arts, social studies, and science. Prior to that, I tutored children in third through fifth grade, student taught in a second grade classroom, and helped kindergarten and first grade students develop beginning reading skills. My career has provided opportunities to work with children in K-5, but my specialty is teaching kids in the upper elementary grades. It is such an exciting time in their development, during which they really start to understand their world.

I am excited to help more young learners on a one-on-one basis. My reputation as a teacher has always been rooted in the empathetic, patient presence I share with children. A majority of my work has been done with refugee and immigrant populations. Regardless of their background, I am dedicated to ensuring academic progress and social-emotional well-being for my students. My teaching philosophy reflects my belief that kids need to see a connection between what they are learning and their personal lives. Furthermore, a child's curiosity is a valuable tool in their own education. Everyone wants to know why things are the way they are, but traditional schooling unfortunately turns this desire off in so many young minds. My teaching and tutoring method is dependent upon learning a student's interests and using them as a starting point to explore content through projects, inquiry, and the use of technology.

In my free time, I enjoy focusing on creative projects. My background is in graphic design and fine art, and I have extensive writing practice. When I can incorporate these skills in my teaching, I feel like I am doing my very best work. I also love to help students develop their artistic abilities.

Math: Throughout my teaching career, I've provided math instruction through whole-class lessons, small group skills practice, and focused tutoring. I have extensive experience with the Everyday Math curriculum and its use of common core methods. I also enjoy finding resources online or creating them when necessary, and using manipulatives to develop deeper levels of understanding. An appreciation of math's relevancy to the real world is crucial for kids to take an interest in improving their skills. I always provide examples of ways in which I personally use a particular math concept, and suggest further ways in which a student will depend upon it in their adult life. Art is often an excellent way to maximize learning.

Language Arts: Writing instruction has always been one of my favorite parts of teaching, partially due to its difficulty for so many kids. It is incredibly rewarding to help a beginning writer break down an assignment and gradually develop the confidence to share their thoughts and feelings. I love to explore literature with students, discovering hidden meanings and exploring the author's craft. This, too, is a valuable step in strengthening writing skills. Poetry is a personal highlight; I have always taken great pleasure in turning my students on to what can initially seem like a foreign language. Finally, there is so much to be learned about our world by mastering the skills necessary to effectively read nonfiction texts. I take pride in finding stories, articles, and other resources that help students better understand themselves and others.

Graphic Design

Before my transition to teaching, I completed an undergraduate program in visual communications and worked for seven years as a professional graphic designer. As a freelancer, I managed creative projects for nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and international corporations. Examples of work done during this period included branding, packaging, advertisements, web design, and various printed materials. I have also served as the creative director of a small publishing company for over ten years now, and have handled the layouts, illustrations, and general design of over sixty books and albums.

In my teaching career, I have used the Common Core math and language arts standards on a daily basis. These guidelines have formed the basis of my lesson objectives and set the expectations for learning. I have also engaged in many professional development workshops in which the standards have been analyzed for a deeper awareness of the skills they address.

After completing a master's program in teaching at Dominican University, I became licensed to teach elementary education in the state of Illinois, with endorsements in art and ESL instruction. As a fourth grade teacher, I have spent seven years planning and delivering differentiated lessons in language arts, math, social studies, and science on a daily basis. Before that, I spent two years volunteering and student teaching across every elementary grade level. My experiences have provided me with an awareness of the best ways to maximize student understanding, and I feel as though I have personally learned something from each of the hundreds of kids I have had the privilege to work with.
