My name is Maria, and I am excited that you are considering me as a tutor! I earned my Bachelor's degree in elementary education, graduating with honors in 2016. Tutoring students in 1st-8th grade classrooms for three and a half years, followed by student teaching one semester of 1st grade, was the highlight of my undergraduate career. Last year I worked full time in a Chicago public high school, tutoring 9th and 10th grade students in algebra and geometry. I have discovered that whatever the age of the student, or the subject at hand, I enjoy helping students to find ways to optimize their strengths with an individually tailored approach to meet their specific needs. Though the classroom environment is also fun, I love working in a one-on-one capacity and giving students the ability to reach higher than they could before. The key to learning is building a positive relationship in which the student can focus and thrive, and I am committed to bringing this, my greatest strength as an educator, to every student I have the privilege of tutoring.

Before I was hired to tutor high school math, I had to take a proficiency exam to determine my readiness to tutor at that level. My mathematical accuracy, knowledge and ability only increased as I spent eight hours a day immersed in the subject for a year. Not only am I able to catch students' mistakes, but I am trained to teach students, ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade, how to analyze their mathematical processes so that they are able to improve their method and approach to mathematics. When working with elementary students, I use a hands-on approach to think about mathematical concepts in a developmentally appropriate sequence and draw from my knowledge of curriculum and outside resources to assist in their learning. My background in elementary education also enables me to identify the developmental gaps in an older student's understanding and reteach those concepts so that they are able to rise to the next level, while simultaneously enabling them to succeed at their current level of study. This was evidenced last year as two-thirds of my high school students increased their basic skills assessments scores by 25% or ranked above 90%, while simultaneously either maintaining or rising at least one letter grade in their math class during our time of working together. The boost in self-confidence, enjoyment, and academic ability was a joy to see in every student.

I also have vast experience with students who come from homeschool backgrounds, having the same experience myself. I am able to help homeschooling students at any level and find ways of enriching the instruction they are receiving at home or in non-traditional settings. As a former elementary school tutor and teacher, I am comfortable and experienced tutoring more than just math, and I am able to assist students in any core subject in which they need additional help. This kind of versatility enables students to receive assistance in the subjects in which they need additional help without changing tutors, thus being able to build on the relational foundation that was already laid.

I am delighted at the prospect of getting to do more of what I love to do: working with students! I am looking forward to hearing from you and can't wait to schedule a lesson.

When I was earning my degree in elementary education, I taught students whose first languages were Russian, Romanian and Spanish. I was privileged to work with these students by identifying their personal struggles, and implementing plans to improve their English in those areas. We met with great success for each of these students. I also have wide and varied experience tutoring students who are learning English, not only in language, but also in other subjects, using English as the medium. I live in a cross-cultural community where I have had the opportunity to speak with people who are learning English all of the time, so I have a long history of informal experience, as well.

With my degree in elementary education, I have a clear understanding of the developmental sequence of mathematics education and can help students go back and fill in gaps, or spend extra time practicing different skills. I have over five years of experience tutoring elementary students and watching them increase in their understanding and gain confidence. I enjoy helping young students find success!
Handwriting,

Handwriting

With my background in elementary education, I have had the opportunity to teach handwriting to first grade students. In our education courses, we were taught how to identify and address reasons for difficulties in handwriting, and I was able to put that into practice as a student teacher with young students who were just beginning to write. I was pleased to see great improvement in my students' abilities, and I am excited to see the same improvement as I continue helping students learn how to write!
Homeschool,

While earning my degree in elementary education, I formally analyzed and evaluated multiple methods of learning, including homeschooling. With over five years of experience tutoring students from a range of academic backgrounds, including homeschoolers, I believe that I have the experience necessary to help students from a homeschooling background to find academic success. Being homeschooled myself, I have close familiarity to most homeschooling methods, curriculum and resources. I am also certified to teach with Association of Christian Schools International.

Chess

Having played chess since childhood, I have an excellent grasp of the rules, as well as of the strategies to win. I have experience teaching children how to play the game well. As a reflective player, I can help students recognize the multiple moves open to them, and help them to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each in order to make the best move. My knowledge of the game is extensive, and goes beyond basic rules to include castling and even the legendary move, en passant.

My child is already asking when the next lesson is

My daughter was scared to meet with a stranger at first but you eased her through it, gave her lots of positive reinforcement, and made it enjoyable. Thank you!

Knowledgeable Math Tutor

My son just completed his first lesson with Maria. She was very knowledgeable and my son was engaged the entire time. She followed the lesson with a detailed summary. He learned so much and that was just the first lesson...thank you, Maria! We look forward to the next lesson.

Excellent choice as tutor!

I was apprehensive on how we would do this lesson online with math and how the teacher's rapport would be with my son. I was quite happy right from the start of the lesson and was very satisfied. She seems to be very intelligent and has an excellent way of teaching. She is definitely enthusiastic and made it both a learning and pleasurable experience for my son!

Great Math tutor

Maria did an online lesson with my son. He’s in 8th grade and needed help reviewing math skills for the high school entrance exam. My son said she did a great job on the first lesson, and she made it easy to understand. We will continue using her.

Smart and patient tutor

Maria has had several online tutoring sessions with my 11-year old son and has really helped him excel at math, which had been his weakest subject. He was able to start off the school year with a lot more confidence. I highly recommend her! And the online tutoring allows for greater flexibility with my son’s schedule.
