I grew up in central Indiana, fully expecting to become a scientist of some type or variety. I have a prodigious natural talent for the life sciences, so I went to Indiana University to study biology. While there, I discovered an equal drive and passion for the study of jazz, and enrolled in the prestigious Jacobs School of Music after a lengthy audition process. Thanks to my drive to succeed at music and my ability to understand and internalize high-level biology concepts, I graduated with a BS Biology and BM Jazz Studies in the year 2016--a feat almost universally considered to be impossible.

I LOVE to teach. I think if you don't pass knowledge on it dies, and dead information serves nobody. I've been given a lot of opportunities to learn, which I have fully taken advantage of--and now I want to pass on as much as I can for as long as I can because I want potential students to experience the same joy in learning and subsequent achievement as I have, except much sooner than I did and at a higher level.

The goal of my teaching is to make you a better student, scientist, composer, trumpeter, trombonist, or drummer than I am.

In regards to my qualifications in composition, an album which I co-composed (2015's "Siglo XXI" on Ad Astrum Records) placed on the NPR Jazz Critics' Poll for 2015, as well as receiving a prestigious ELU from the French publication "CitizenJazz". These compositions were built on a comprehensive understanding of music theory as given to me by the rigorous series of courses at the Jacobs School of Music. My composition skills also serve as the core for my current position as Director of Music at Marquette Park, where I privately teach over a dozen students (from ages 4 to adult) a week on a plurality of instruments and direct community ensembles.

In terms of my instrumental ability, my skill on trumpet/cornet has taken me on tours of the West Coast of the United States (Durand Jones and the Indications) and through Germany and Austria (Indiana Jazz Exchange). My trombone acumen has allowed me to professionally perform with multiple GRAMMY-nominee Wayne Wallace (himself a trombonist) in his Trombone Octet, and my drumming ability has led to invitations to come perform with Indianapolis' most known trumpeter (Clifford Ratliff) from the man himself.

In terms of my academic acumen and what I'm able to do with science, I received the Indiana University Excellence Scholarship as well as the Indiana University Arts and Science Scholars Scholarship in 2011. I completed the full course of study for a BS Biology, which includes extensive laboratory hours and classwork.

Please shoot me a message if you feel I can help you improve! I am currently very available for lessons and tutoring, but I expect that to change soon--so please, reach out to me today!

With my first recorded project, "Siglo XXI" by the Liberation Music Collective (which I co-lead), I received an ELU from the French publication CitizenJazz. Other bandleaders in that group include Christian Scott and Avishai Cohen. In 2016, I largely composed and set the libretto for the ground-breaking jazz opera "UTOPIA: 21st-Century Reflections on the Pursuit of Perfection" as commissioned by the Jacobs School of Music Project Jumpstart. It was premiered and filmed at the Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, IN to positive reviews. I continue to compose for the Liberation Music Collective (its newest record, "Rebel Portraiture", was released in August 2017), as well as for my frequent collaborator Sean Imboden. The Sean Imboden Large Ensemble continues to play my large-ensemble works at events such as the Indy Jazz Festival, Indianapolis Artscape, and so forth.

Drums,

Drums

I teach 3-4 drumset students a week at Marquette Park in Chicago. I start them on snare drum, where we deal with modified excerpts from the Moeller Method and the beginning rudiments in Alan Dawson's Rudimental Ritual before moving to drumset. From there, we learn archetypal grooves from recordings and common-practice embellishments of those grooves. We also develop limb independence via Stick Control, first working through a page with RH and LH, then working through that same page with RF and LH, and continuing all possible permutations of the limbs through Stone's seminal work.
Trombone,

Trombone

My professional career on trombone began when I was tapped to perform with multiple GRAMMY-nominee Wayne Wallace in his trombone octet, playing compositions from his albums (Latin Jazz--Jazz Latin, To Hear From There, etc). I have also performed on trombone with my own project OGC, and with the singer-songwriter Brian Berger (as reviewed by PlaylistPlay, JaxxShack, etc.). Since then, I have spent considerable time mastering the instrument, completely vanishing from public life to practice 6-8 hours a day from the fall of 2016 to the summer of 2017. I feel as though I have struck on an efficient and elegant way to play an instrument that has stymied so many in the past.
Trumpet,

Trumpet

I have extensive professional experience as a jazz soloist; standouts of that career include stints with the Sean Imboden Quintet in Indianapolis (as heard on the 2017 album "Horizon") and with the Indiana Jazz Exchange, which performed throughout Germany and Austria in the summer of 2016. In addition, I have a background playing in R&B horn sections and in soul horn sections. During my time at IU, I was the lead trumpeter for the nationally acclaimed IU Soul Revue (which demanded extreme upper register control and endurance), and in the summer of 2017 I was the section trumpeter for Durand Jones and the Indications on their tour of the West Coast and American Midwest.

On the road to depth & passion

Matt is great at what he does and is inspiring my son to develop his craft. I appreciate his commitment and ability to connect with his students. He personally writes out lessons and practice runs so my son can practice between sessions.

Patient with a complete novice!

Matt did a great job of not only introducing me to the first round of technical steps but also setting the stage for the process. I am seriously looking forward to working with him.
