About Alexis

I'm a science and math educator excited about working with you to find the best way to gain mastery of science and math knowledge and skills and reach your learning goals. My first experience with tutoring was during my undergraduate physics degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I discovered what really excited me was not just learning class material but also finding the most effective ways to learn physics concepts with my peers. Since then, I've tutored math and science for over four years, been a Teaching Assistant for physics courses at multiple institutions, and served as an instructor for STEM educational programming. I have four years of experience working as a private tutor for undergraduate students in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. I’ve worked successfully with these students to identify areas of focus and work through personalized lessons in order to help them build confidence in their math and science abilities and increase their scores on exams and standardized tests.

What sets me apart as a tutor is that I understand students seek tutoring for a variety of reasons and am patient in figuring out my students’ needs and working with them in making tangible progress towards their academic goals.

I’m always excited about learning and thinking about new ways to teach physics in ways that are engaging and authentic to my students. I am an active member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and currently conduct research in the field of Physics Education Research. I have an associate’s degree in general science from Moraine Valley Community College and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While there, I served as a Teaching Assistant for an undergraduate electricity and magnetism course, where I instructed in-class labs, hosted office hours, and held study sessions to make sure my students were prepared for exams. I’ve also completed graduate physics coursework at Florida International University and served as one of three instructors for a mechanics course where I implemented research-based curriculum in which students learn physics by doing activities that are very similar to the work actual physicists do: developing scientific models. In addition to my instructional work, I have over four years of experience as a private tutor in physics and one year of experience designing and teaching innovative summer camps for children ages 8-18 focused on science, design, and the arts.

I’m excited to work with students through Wyzant. Please contact me if you have any questions, and we’ll start working out how I can best meet your tutoring needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Fantastic tutor! Highly recommended!

Alexis and I covered some basics of acoustic physics like frequency, pitch, wavelength, and fundamental frequency and harmonics. Alexis's patience with my slow-going was impressive, but what stood out the most to me was his method of approaching the material. Alexis was quick to pick up when I was getting frustrated with one means of explanation and would quickly bring it back to a point of compr
