About Benjamin

My name is Ben, and I graduated from Northwestern University in June 2016 with a degree in Journalism. Despite my degree, I plan to spend the rest of my career working in the field of education.

This past year I worked as a full-time tutoring fellow for a non-profit organization called SAGA Innovations. Essentially, I tutored 9th and 10th-grade students in Algebra 1 and Geometry at a school on the South Side of Chicago. I formed positive relationships with all of my students and I look forward to returning to the same school next year.

I have also tutored 3rd-5th graders with their Hebrew reading skills back when I was in high school.

The thing I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing the look on my students' faces when they understand a difficult concept and are able to solve problems independently.

There are a few reasons why I believe I'm a successful tutor. For one, I'm able to break down complex problems so they are a lot easier to solve. Once students realize that "difficult" problems aren't really as tough as they seem, their confidence increases and they start to enjoy the subject matter a lot more.

Secondly, I think I do a really nice job making math problems relatable. A common complaint from students when it comes to math is that they don't think they'll ever need to use certain topics in "real life." With me, I don't see this being a problem, because I use things that my students are interested in - like sports or fashion - and include them in problems so that they become a lot more invested in finding out the answers.

Lastly, I think I do a good job getting along with students of all age groups, because it wasn't that long ago that I was in their shoes, as a middle or high school student, so I'm able to relate to them on a personal level.

Feel free to contact me at any time, and I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was a full-time Algebra 1 and Geometry tutor this past year, working for a non-profit organization called SAGA Innovations.

American History

While I have not tutored American History like I have done for math, I minored in American History at Northwestern University and scored a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam.

Geometry

I was a full-time Geometry tutor with SAGA Innovations last year.

Knowledgeable and relatable

Benjamin used this first lesson to assess my children. In addition he provided a nice job aid. He made the kids feel comfortable by making math as fun as possible in the summer. Looking forward to our next lesson.
