About Hanna

Hello! I’m an experienced tutor who keeps up-to-date in math and computer science education while working in data science. I enjoy helping students figure out what pieces are missing in their understanding of core concepts and building up a strong base of understanding. I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels, whether you need extra support in a subject where you’re struggling or want to be challenged in an area you love.

I graduated from the University of Chicago with an Honors BS in Mathematics, and recently completed a year and a half of machine learning graduate coursework there. Throughout the past six years I’ve found ways to work my love of teaching into whatever project I'm currently engaged in, and I’ve developed a range of strategies to help students achieve their goals. I can effectively figure out how a student is thinking about a problem in order to correct any misunderstandings and help the student get back on track.

I have extensive experience teaching math at a variety of levels. I delight in exploring mathematics at a deep level, including completing mathematics research in college. I have been a teaching assistant for college-level calculus courses, done one-on-one math tutoring with middle and high school students, and led group problem-solving sessions for an accelerated summer math program for middle schoolers.

I have excelled in a range of graduate computer science courses, and have been programming extensively for the last five years. I've taught programming labs for students in middle school through college, so I am comfortable working with students working towards many different goals and from many different backgrounds.

I will strive to help you achieve your own goals, and develop a strong foundation and excellent study habits along the way. I also work to make sure lessons are enjoyable and approachable. When you contact me here we can chat about what you’re hoping to learn and develop a plan together to make that happen. I do ask for four hours notice for cancelled appointments, and will charge a half-hour fee for no-shows. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson, please be in touch!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Python

I have been working in Python for 3 years now, and have experience both building projects from scratch and collaborating on larger code bases. I have particular experience working with NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas packages for numerical and statistical programming. I also have 2 years of formal programming teaching experience in lab settings working with students with little-to-no programming experience, so I am comfortable teaching basics through a variety of coding exercises as well as talking through and exploring the finer points of the Python language.

Statistics

I have graduate-level coursework in statistics, and I've used this understanding in real-world problems in data science applications.

Very helpful and thorough explanations.

Hanna is great! She is patient, knows her stuff, and takes the time to explain each concept in detail. I'm a newbie self-taught programmer so have a lot of gaps in my knowledge. I was particularly interested in code reviews/generally improving my program design. Hanna read over my code before our session and came ready with a plan of attack. We started by reviewing one program (tictactoe AI)
