About Meghan

My name is Meghan Troy and I am a second year special education teacher. In my classroom, I have students who range from first to fourth grade with academic and behavioral disabilities. I graduated from Illinois State University in 2015 with a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education and an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. I volunteered with the program "Partners in Reading" during my time at ISU where I was a Reading tutor once a week. I also have a lot of experience tutoring/teaching through my wide range of clinical placements at ISU. I worked as a paraprofessional in a junior high Special Education Classroom at Elim Christian Services. Also, I have done a lot of volunteer work with organizations for people with special needs.
My love of teaching ultimately stems from my younger sister, Patty, who has Down Syndrome. She is an inspiration to me and I always strive to teach my students like I would teach her. I have always helped her with her academic work on numerous occasions. I believe I will be a good tutor because I like to find new and creative ways to make academic work fun and engaging. As a special education teacher, I am good at modifying a curriculum to fit a learner's academic needs. I love incorporating technology into lessons and I am good at managing student behavior (and creating behavior plans). I am also a new teacher so I am familiar with the new curriculums out there and with Common Core. Ultimately, I am very passionate about teaching/tutoring and promise that I take the education of all my learners very seriously. Nothing makes me happier than to see my students succeed.

I have good knowledge of elementary math. I am very good at teaching addition and subtraction with a number line, place value, graphing, double digit addition and subtraction, time, shapes, greater than/less than, etc. I have access to a lot of pictures, concrete objects, resources (online and paper), videos, etc. to help students who are more visual learners. I am also very patient person and know that all learners are different and work at different paces.

I believe I am a very good English tutor/teacher. Growing up, English and Reading were always my strongest subjects. I am very familiar with a lot of the Reading curriculums out there. I am good with teaching students different reading strategies and test students for reading fluency tests. I am good with teaching students new high frequency sight words and using sight words in different ways for a greater understanding. I am very good at writing papers and proofreading. I am very knowledgeable about grammar. Also, I am very good at creating graphic organizers and study guides to help guide students with their writing. Also, I know a lot of good teaching techniques to help students with reading comprehension and looking for context cues within the text and pictures.

I am very passionate about teaching and believe you would be very happy with me as your tutor. I have a very flexible schedule. My school day is 7:40 A.M. to 2:10 so I am available any time after 2:30 most days. I am very patient and love creating lessons for students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I am a second year special education teacher. My classroom has students ranging from 1st to 4th grade. I utilize a very good Reading curriculum in my classroom that would give me access to great supplemental reading materials to help with a wide range of reading skills. I am very good at administering reading fluency tests and teaching students beginning and ending sounds to help improve their reading skills to sound out words. Also, I am good with teaching students about reading comprehension and using pictures and context clues to make predictions/recall information from text.
