About Rukiye

I am currently working as office support assistant in the Computer Science Department at Northeastern Illinois University. Prior to this position, I worked as an intern at Eve Business Consulting in Chicago. In that position, I was responsible for assisting B2B events and translating documents from English to Turkish, and providing interpreting assistance in business meetings for Turkish Trade Delegations.

I also had worked as Turkish teacher at the Weekend School of Turkish American Society for two years. My tasks in this position included developing lesson plans, planning language activities by using websites and language apps, and preparing assignments and quizzes for students at different Turkish language levels. During that time, I was also giving private Turkish classes for US-born children whose only either father or mom was Turkish.

During my grad study, I took classes in linguistics and TESL. Those classes allowed me to develop various techniques and methods that facilitate the language learning process of diverse learners. My main approach to teaching language is student-centered. Therefore, I would prefer to collaborate with students when designing and developing lesson plans and certainly to be open to their feedback to revise plans so that students' needs are met effectively.

I am very confident in tutoring Turkish in all four areas: listening-speaking-writing-reading.

I came to the US in 2008, and since that time I have been visiting my family in Istanbul and friends in various cities in Turkey during summer as well as holidays.

I always follow up news and trends through Turkish TV channels, online newspaper, and social media. I have also subscriptions to various websites where I track top stories and local/social issues. Furthermore, via forums and blogs, I have a chance to read/post comments on new trends in fashion, music, beauty supplies, urban living, and movies/ TV series. In addition, my sister, my friends, and my cousins are my living connections to Turkish culture. Through my daily conversations with them, I have an opportunity to speak Turkish pretty much very day. All these allow me to staying up to date with Turkish phrases and idioms that are important to learn for daily conversations.

I believe my tutoring experience at the Turkish Weekend School and being a native Turkish speaker make me an ideal candidate

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
