About Rachel

Hi! I am a graduate of Oberlin College where I majored in religion and classics. For three years at Oberlin I worked as a writing tutor, both in the drop-in writing center in the library, and as a course-specific tutor for various classes. My senior year I studied abroad at Oxford University where I got to study with some of the most knowledgeable professors and brightest students. I also graduated with high honors for my degree in religion.

From my work as a writing tutor, and as a student myself, I know that sometimes the hardest part about writing is getting started. I love being able to help students find their interests and figure out how to write something that will not only be successful academically, but that they are going to enjoy. Writing can be hard, but it's my goal to help students find the fun and satisfaction in it as well.

I specialize in helping students with writing in many subjects. I have worked with students on essays ranging from humanities, to social sciences, to hard sciences, as well as with many ESL/ELL students. I have tutored students in all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming ideas, to finding a structure, to putting finishing edits on an essay.

In addition to writing, I also help students hone their study skills. I firmly believe that not all students are the same, and there is no one-size-fits-all for study skills. I know that, and I enjoy working with students to find the methods that work best for them. Whether it is creating systems of accountability, or organizing your day, I can help you figure out how to make your studies much more manageable.

I look forward to hearing from you. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

At Oberlin College I majored in Religion with a focus on the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and graduated with high honors for my thesis on this subject. I have also studied the Hebrew Bible in my semester abroad at Oxford University. I was a course tutor for several religion courses at Oberlin that focused on the Hebrew Bible and I am comfortable looking at multiple translations, including the original Hebrew.

Proofreading

I have worked as a writing tutor for the past three years helping my students edit and proofread their essays. My goals in proofreading are not only to help you catch the final details in your work, but also to give you the tools to find them on your own.

Public Speaking

I have years of experience presenting my academic work to classes and audiences, and believe that practice and confidence makes public speaking not only comfortable, but enjoyable. As a leader of several student organizations I regularly spoke in front of audiences of up to 300 to introduce speakers and present presentations. I have also worked as a tutor with college students, both formally and informally, to help coach them in being more at ease and natural in their own public speaking.

Religion

At Oberlin College I majored in Religion with a focus on the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and graduated with high honors for my thesis on this subject. I have also studied religion in my semester abroad at Oxford University. I was a course tutor for several religion courses at Oberlin, and completed course work on religions including: modern Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, ancient Greek, ancient Roman, and ancient Israelite.

Study Skills

While at Oberlin College I put many hours of trail and error into figuring out which study methods worked best for me. I succeeded in graduating with high honors, and with a 3.84 GPA and firmly believe that this success is due in part to my study strategies. I come equipped with tips on everything from time management, to self-accountability, to material review, that will help you get your studies on track. I believe that students are not a one-size-fits-all, and that strategies and skills must be tailored to fit their personal learning style.
