Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Throughout my experience, I have worked with numerous students with ADD/ADHD diagnoses. Since students with ADD/ADHD maintain focus when learning actively, I find educational games, conversations, or small tasks produce the most amount of growth. Over-stimulation is a challenge as well so, I like to keep the work space organized, quiet, and cover up any non-essential text or pictures.

Elementary (K-6th)

I majored in Elementary Education from Wheaton College (Illinois) with a focus in Psychology. My experience includes 5 years of formal classroom teaching in intermediate elementary at rigorous private schools, one year full-time in a Special Education School, and two more years involved in tutoring struggling Middle School students in the public schools.

Handwriting

I have earned a teaching certificate in Illinois. And I was trained in Orton-Gillingham phonic. I spent 6 years teaching upper elementary at a demanding private school -Rigorous teacher who focuses on building reading skills while studying Math, Science, and Social Studies Side note for fun. I believe there is an undeniable link between proper handwriting and increased reading and writing skills. I use a systematic approach focusing on letter formation, size, and spacing.

Homeschool

I have 6 years teaching upper elementary at a demanding private school. I'm a proponent of homeschooling because more and more schools are losing the focus of educating the whole child. Education is about giving intellectual, moral, and social instruction to a student. Often, homeschoolers have a much greater opportunity to follow through on this lofty goal!

When I was in high school, I often was the one homeschooling my younger 3rd grader sister after school. Since then, I have realized that much of homeschooling is setting defined routines while taking into account the age, motivation, and subjects being taught.

My overall goal would be to map a daily schedule and map out overall plans in each subject area for the year. In each subject, I would use a grade-level assessment to incorporate weaker areas into defined units.

Study Skills

Study skills can promote life-long habits of organization and true learning. Studying should not be a passive process where students just re-read information and hope they absorb the material. Studying should be an active process where students are challenged to understand the material. Depending on how your child learns best, there are many tricks I would love to share with them to help them absorb and learn material!

With 6 years of formal teaching experience, I often would provide study tips for my students. In certain subjects, I created review games for students to play with each other or at home.
As a professional tutor, I enjoy taking each student's learning style into account and develop study plans.

Swimming

I was a competitive swimmer for 15 years who enjoys teaching, modeling, and evaluating swimming technique for all four strokes. I'm excited to see people of all ages learn the best form of exercise as well as stay safe near the water! My best strokes were butterfly and breaststroke but more recently, I have only been doing long distance freestyle open water swimming.

Awesome tutor

My 4th grader said "she's the best tutor I have ever had." He's had 3 so far. And after the second session he seems to be more excited about learning math. Lindsay is kind patient and seems very knowledgeable.
