About Joan Arnau

Hi! I am a composer and pianist, trained at the New England Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. I received my Doctorate of Musical Arts this past spring. I have taught people from all ages for six years and I love teaching anything related to music. I am open to teaching any kind of music, so get in touch and I would be happy to get to know what you would like to work on!

In addition, I also teach Spanish. I am originally from Barcelona, Spain, and have tutored privately since I first moved to the U.S., nine years ago. I adapt to the students' needs, but I do like to work comprehensively: speaking, reading, and writing. I love teaching Spanish, since it reminds me of home. :)

I have excellent rapport with students and I am always very interested in what they bring to the table. Let's work together!

I would love to get to know you, chat, and find out what interests you about music and Spanish!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been composing since age 16 and hold Composition degrees from the New England Conservatory and Northwestern University. I have an international career as a composer, since I have been commissioned by soloists and ensembles in America and Europe.

Music History

Although my doctorate is not in historical musicology, I also pursue scholarly research on the socioeconomic conditions that lead music to emerge as a cultural artifact in the Anglosphere in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Taking as its thesis the intersection of recent developments in philosophy and sociology, my doctoral dissertation examines the viability, or lack thereof, of experimental music as a force for social change. Particularly, I analyze the music of Welsh composer Richard Barrett in connection with his political aspirations. A second priority of my investigation relates to the use of noise as a valuable yet thoroughly underrated means of elaborating sophisticated sonic discourses. This research has been published by both academic and popular platforms, including the University of Huddersfield Press, &&& Journal, and NewMusicBox. In addition, as a native Catalan and Spanish speaker, fluent in English and competent in French, I have the ability to investigate primary sources across a considerable linguistic spectrum.

Piano

I have studied piano since age 5 and I am now 28. In addition, I have played many different types of music on piano: classical, jazz, pop, etcetera.

Sight Singing

I have taught Aural Skills at Northwestern University for five years. That requires me to be able to sight sing very well, as sight-singing is one of the major features of this undergraduate course.
