About Carly

I'm a recent summa cum laude graduate from UIC's honors college where I earned a BA in Media, Rhetoric and Professional Writing, and a BFA in Theater. As a tutor of over ten years, I know that my enthusiasm, extensive experience, and chronic curiosity are the most valuable assets I bring to each session.

It is so easy to become discouraged when faced with an academic challenge. It is my ability to recognize those cross-roads moments, and my enthusiasm and experience in navigating students through them, that make me a strong tutor.

While it is my goal to challenge my students, it is not my goal to overwhelm. I want to reach a deeper understanding of the material through enthusiastic investigation and practice. My philosophy is that a genuine understanding is key. When we are absorbing information to regurgitate it on an exam, we are only temporarily beating the system.

I have a massive amount of experience assisting students with English composition, proofreading, literature and public speaking. I believe self-education is key to a happy life so I take every opportunity to study and remain on top of new trends--particularly with regards to my work (MLA, APA, Professional formats: cover letters, resumes etc).

I have competed nationally for public speaking titles and have won several competitions. After graduating the team, I became a coach and assisted many students in achieving those titles as well. Coaching and teaching have always been passions of mine.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Between 2007 and 2011, I competed on the state and national level in public speaking multiple times. I was 7th in the nation in 2010 and 1st in Ohio in 2011. Immediately after 2011, I began coaching and have continued to coach and judge for events in the National Forensics League each subsequent year.

Theatre

I completed the BFA theater program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I received talent scholarships each year of my education, and have since performed as a voice over (Butterball Turkeys and The Onion) and theater artist all over the city in theaters including: The Athenaeum, Steppenwolf, and UIC.
