Hello! I recently received my Reading Specialist licensure from DePaul University, and have been working one on one with clients for 2+ years. I specialize in early reading skills such as phomenic awareness, letter/sound knowledge, phonics, spelling, decoding, and beginning reading skills. I love working with students to help them set and accomplish goals for their reading!
I have spent the past 6 years in K-2 classrooms, with a focus on providing interventions for at-risk students. If your child is struggling with any element(s) of reading, I will be able to develop an intervention plan that will include instructional strategies as well as methods to monitor progress over time. I have also worked with students who are meeting learning expectations, but who also want that extra practice outside of school. I'm looking forward to getting to know your child and helping them to become the best reader they can be!
The knowledge I have gained through my training as a reading specialist helps me understand and facilitate the important relationship between reading and writing.
My experience as a classroom teacher has helped me form a solid foundation of knowledge of the Common Core. I am familiar with expectations at all early elementary grade levels, as well as the progression of the standards over time.
For many struggling readers and spellers, phonics is the key to advancement and understanding. My background in running phonics-based decoding programs helps me provide the right intervention to students who need help in this area.
Phonics knowledge and spelling have a strong relationship. By providing instruction first in decoding different phonics patterns, students are able to then apply this knowledge in their writing. I am familiar with programs such as Words Their Way and Corrective Reading, both of which provide phonics instruction as it relates to spelling.
I have a flexible evening schedule and am available on alternating weekends. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding my experience or availability! Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am very familiar with the Common Core because of my experience as a teacher for the past 6 years. Both of the schools I have worked in have used CCSS since they rolled out in 2010, and I have explored the reading/English standards extensively as part of my Reading Specialist licensure program.
As a part of my Reading Specialist program, we explored different intervention programs that can be used to teach phonics to struggling readers. I am also familiar with Words Their Way, a spelling program that uses phonics knowledge as the base. I am also familiar with teaching and reviewing phonics knowledge in small group or one on one reading sessions, so that students use their phonics knowledge as part of reading real books, not just solely in reading word lists.
