MBI (Historical Theology)

My name is Andre F. I live in Chicago with my wife and two lovely children. My wife and I have been in education for 5 years; we are both certified teachers and love to tutor when time allows. I have my bachelors in Historical Theology and my masters in Urban Education.
My first year in education I taught as a 5th-7th grade paraprofessional in the special education department. Years 2 and 3 I worked with Teach for America. During these years I taught 6th grade history and writing on Chicago's South Side. Lately I have been working at a Noble Charter school teaching 11th and 12th grade English. I specialize in direct grammar instruction, writing fluency and form, reading comprehension and both text-dependent and inferential question response.
During my high school teaching years, I have been an advisor to 18 young men. I met with them twice a day for both social-emotional development and academic achievement. I just had the honor of watching these guys graduate and move on to college. Along with daily advising, I hold office hours where students sign up for tutoring throughout the week. I am currently moving from the classroom to private practice education while I further my education at the University of Chicago. I love helping people achieve their goals, and tutoring has always been one great way to do this!
ACT English: The high school I taught at, in the Spring of 2015, ended up having the highest ACT score in North Lawndale and the surrounding West Side neighborhoods. In 2016, my co-teacher and myself had the honor of celebrating not only another year of overall ACT growth, but the highest subject growth on the 11th grade team.
ACT Reading: Although our high school had a History/Reading instructor, the English department tag-teams many of the same reading strategies during in depth literature analysis.
English: I foster both comprehension and inquiry through the use of modern and classic texts. I help push critical and creative thinking through in depth argument/theme analysis. I teach the skills needed in order to effectively write in various writing styles. I teach strategies for vocabulary growth and I presentation etiquette.
Grammar: Everything needed to meet ACT growth goals.
Reading: Both phonemic awareness and comprehension.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
