With my passion for lifelong learning and 12 years of teaching experience, I believe my instructional skills; interpersonal skills and work ethic would guarantee your success in school.

My experience in teaching is vast and includes an array of leadership positions and responsibilities. In the last 12 years I have served as an English as a Second Language educator, which included a caseload ranging from 50 to 70 students from 25 different countries of origin. As a reading specialist, I also diagnosed, assessed and taught reading to students who were originally reading below grade level. I founded a team that created a data-proven successful positive behavior program over a five-year period. I also served on the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee and Tech Cadre, and directed all ESL testing and screening including W-APT, ACCESS, Rigby, MAP and Terra Nova testing, originating two-before and after school literacy clubs and was a member of the Return To Intervention, or RTI and Interventionist Teams. In addition, I have been a member of the Literacy Committee. As an interventionist, I had the opportunity to provide intensive interventions for those students reading below grade level. I am a member of the Illinois Reading Council and the International Reading Association.

A master's in teaching and reading, a type 03 and type 10 Illinois certification and extensive experience provide a rich background to assist you in reaching academic goals. As an ESL teacher of at-risk students, my goal is to give students a sense of accomplishment through academic success and celebrate those successes. Using differentiated materials and maintaining a culturally rich and sensitive classroom have been extremely successful in the student's successes. Building a bridge between the parents and the school is paramount in the success of the students in school. As the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee member, we encouraged an open-door policy with parents as well as providing evening informational gatherings where dinner and childcare was provided. Understanding what really excites my students, whether it's soccer, dance or any interest they have is so important and I continually work to provide books, magazines and games that zero in on what they like to do.

The certificate of advanced study in reading and experience in teaching reading has given me a rich background from which to target very specific phonics skills that need to be taught. The phonics assessments I've used are very detailed and provide multiple data which has enabled me to focus in on the precise needs of my students. Sharing information with parents and explaining the science behind reading assessments has been a particularly rewarding experience over the years. It is a passion of mine because reading is the basis for all other learning.

Spelling goes hand-in-hand with reading, so building upon phonics skills naturally improves spelling achievement. I have used many different types of materials, differentiated for the type of learner my students are. For example, for tactile learners I have created and used a number of hands-on materials to manipulate letters. Bananagrams and Jenga are two very effective tools in teaching spelling. The reading and phonics assessments allow me to specifically diagnose areas of need in spelling achievement.

I just love seeing the smile on students' faces when they experience success in any task and enjoy celebrating those successes with them. This is the reason I became a teacher. To see those smiles and to lovingly, patiently provide the help needed to reach their goals.
