About Angelina

I have tutored for many years, and continue to enjoy teaching diverse subjects to all kinds of people, from different ages, social and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, ethnic origins, and abilities and disabilities. I enjoy it deeply, because I believe that teaching is a commitment to working for and with diverse communities and individuals and learning from them on a basis of mutual respect.

I am an actress, playwright, director, professor and researcher. I am also an interpreter, a translator, a freelance journalist and a voice over artist. I am a published poet, playwright, researcher, and a university professor.

I published a book on Contemporary Indigenous Mexican Theatre, two plays and a book of poems. I taught courses and seminars to immigrant, peasant and indigenous women in Spain and Mexico and gave lectures and workshops in universities and cultural centres in U.S., (SFSU, University of California at Santa Barbara and Saint Augustine, Chicago) Mexico, (UNAM, UDLAP AND UAP) France (University of Perpignan) and Spain (University Autónoma of Barcelona - where I was a tenured track professor).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

Ever since I was a teenager I was a member of a cinema club, and had to write informative leaflets and attend, review and discuss all kinds of films, from classical silent movies (Chaplin, Keaton, etc...) to the most modern, and any thing in between. I read many books about and by film makers, film techniques and methodology, etc.. I am a film fan. I read Eisenstein's treatises, Truffaut interviews to Hitchcock, Luis Buñuel, etc, etc...

I am also an actress who has worked in cinema and TV and know what it feels like from the inside... You can actually find my audiovisual credits by looking me up in IMDB. I know the film world from the inside, and can teach you about the different kinds of shots, the shooting and editing stages, the final cut, etc..

Speech

I am an actress who has given seminars on voice and diction to both actors and non actors. I teach breathing, projection, sensory memory, improvisation, diction, reading, reciting, etc... I have taught these workshops both in universities and in private coaching sessions, to groups and on a one on one basis. Some of the universities where I have taught Voice are SFSU (San Francisco State University) for their Ongoing Adut Education Program, and the Universidad del Valle de Mexico, where I coached university professors who had a problem with using their voice in classes overpopulated with students. I have also taught regular Voice classes to students of drama at the UAP and UDLAP in Mexico, and here in Chicago I gave some Voice workshops for the Cervantes Institute.

I am also a voice over actress who can talk about pace, pauses, etc..

I am an interpreter in Conferences and Courts, where accuracy and Voice projection are essential tools for a good job.

Theatre

More than 30 years experience as an actress, more than 20 years experience as a playwright and stage director. Among others I have been invited to participate in the Bogota and Cali Theatre Festivals with my play "Phoolan is Everyone", that I wrote and which I perform. I have also brought this play to the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, India and to the International Conference of Women Playwrights in Stockholm, Sweden.

My experience teaching both theoretical and practical classes of theatre arts at different universities in Mexico and the US (such as acting, voice, political theatre of 20th C, dramatic genres, researching drama, etc... I taught theatre arts at the UDLAP and UAP Universities in Mexico, and at the UNITED World College in New Mexico. I have directed my students in plays, pantomimes, story-telling shows and staged poetry shows. I can teach how to create a collective play from scratch.

I have experience researching drama, and can also teach drama theory and research. I am an expert teacher of voice and diction, as well as improvisation and techniques such as Theatre of the Oppressed among others.
