About Amy

I am a recent graduate from the University of Chicago with a Master of Arts in the Humanities, focus on Renaissance art history and printmaking.

In the past, I have led symposiums at Columbia College Chicago, attended by instructors, graduate and undergraduate students alike. I lectured about film design, as well as design fundamentals in relation to art and history. My goals were to always help those attending my lectures to understand the relationship between art and history, and how those elements translated into design.

Currently, I am continuing my own research into 16th century Chinese and European prints, and plan on applying to PhD programs this fall to further my studies in art history.

I am bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English. I have studied in Beijing, China for five years and, since graduating from the University of Chicago, I have worked as an interpreter for a small Chinese company. As a Chinese tutor, I can help with beginner's Chinese ranging from pronunciation and pinyin, to everyday conversation.

I am a native English speaker, and I am in the process of obtaining my ESL certification through TESOL. In addition, I have studied at the well-respected writing program at the University of Chicago, affectionately named "The Little Red Schoolhouse".

History has always been an area of focus for me, and I have taken numerous classes at my undergraduate and graduate institution. My areas of expertise include the Chinese Qin, Han, Yuan and Ming dynasty; medieval, Renaissance and early modern Europe. Furthermore, as part of my research for my master's thesis I studied the history of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as the Florentine and Venetian Renaissance.

I have a very diverse background, and I hope some of my expertise can be used to help you improve!
I am generally available everyday from 9am to 8pm, and I either travel to student homes or find the best possible method to meet. I will also make myself available for conference sessions to see if I am the best match for your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I am bilingual Mandarin Chinese and English. Not only did I grow up speaking Chinese at home, but I also lived, studied and worked in Beijing and Wuxi, China. Just recently, I was an interpreter for a small company based in the Jiangsu province.
