About Cora

I'm a lifelong learner, teacher and explorer of the world - having taught on three continents and taken classes on four. I love the moment when the the connections are finally made between the student and subject, the aha moment.

Having both taught and been a students in numerous circumstances, I understand how learning styles differ and the need to connect the subject matter with the student in their style of learning.

I started teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) as a tutor and then spent two years teaching it in the Peace Corps. Three of my students earned scholarships to study in the US.

After returning to the US, I continued to teach ESL and started doing evaluations for a non-profit. I have a unique understanding of learning and mastering English from my experiences learning other languages in different settings, from courses at school to full immersion programs.

Beyond my degree in History, I have the experience of traveling around the world, living on four continents, experiencing history by walking the battlefields or exploring the museums and teaching it for over four years.

I look forward to chatting and helping you succeed in learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a MEd from Tennessee State University. For 3.5 years, I taught 4th - 8th grade at the American University of Monrovia with subjects ranging from Art to Math. I also spent one year teaching Kindergarten in the U.S. at a private school.
