About Josh

As a high school student in rural, northern Utah, history and geography classes introduced me to just how big the world is. I wanted to see more of it; I wanted to understand how it all works and things came to be the way they are. This curiosity has driven me through three degrees in diverse subjects, across continents for studies abroad and solo backpacking adventures, and into archives to explore the complexities of the past. Curiosity is the most important gift any teacher ever gave me, and as a tutor, I believe its my role to inspire that curiosity in my students and teach them how to explore worlds of knowledge and express clearly what they find. Aside from my studies as an aspiring historian of China, I love exploring Chicago's music scene with friends, practicing yoga, and obsessively following my favorite TV shows.

I've lived and worked in China, studied Chinese academically, tutored Chinese privately for two years, and conduct my academic research in Chinese.

I have tutored college students in writing for three years, ESL for two years, and scored in the 96th percentile on the verbal and writing portions of the GRE.

Learning can be challenging, but it's also really exciting. I love helping all of my students find excitement and joy in the learning process, and my top goal is to help you succeed. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have an MA degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Studying the intellectual lineages of Anthropology was part of my course work. I also took quite a few Anthropology courses as an undergraduate and continually read Anthropological academic publications.

Chinese

I have been studying Chinese for nearly ten years. I completed a Chinese minor at Utah State University. I tutored Chinese privately for two years. I worked for CBS Manufacturing Group auditing factories in China, conducting all business matters exclusively in Chinese. My current academic research is conducted in Chinese as well.
