About Crystal

I am an aspiring and charismatic teacher who emphasizes uplift and empowerment through curriculum. With a focus on English Literature and African American studies, I am a hard-working and persistent recent graduate student that is dedicated to education. I want to educate various ages on pervasive racial issues and how its subtleties radiate through literature and creative writing. Focusing especially on African American and Gender Studies literature, I wish to use students' talents--whether hidden or unconcealed--to express themselves. Reading and writing poetry, fiction, non-fiction and prose are adequate strategies used to encourage freedom of expression.

My specialty is in improving reading, writing, grammar, proofreading, and literature--anything that involves pen and paper! My goal is to develop a relationship with my client that increases confidence, pride in their work, and a love of learning. I graduated from Northwestern University (Go 'Cats!) with a major in English, and then went on to pursue a master's in Teacher Education with a focus in English.

I have extensive practice improving my students' writing--from grammar, to always-evolving diction, to perfecting tone in an analytical paper v. an argumentative paper. As a student-teacher, I worked hands-on and one-on-one with my students throughout the school day and through email correspondence in order to improve their writing.

If you're ready to be challenged and become a better writer, contact me! You will walk away uplifted and ready for more.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I earned a B.A. in English from Northwestern University. I have so much passion for English--from creative writing, to expository essays.

Grammar

As a student-teacher in Massachusetts, I thoroughly examined 90+ students' essays, helping them improve their grammar and vocabulary usage. I tutored after-school, and held many individual conferences to improve my students' writing.

Literature

At Oxford University, Northwestern University, and Harvard University, I studied literature extensively. From British literature, to contemporary literature, to cultural and progressive literature, there is no text that I've found that I didn't fall in love with! I also enjoy exploring themes and content with students because their voices create harmonies in my heart.

Proofreading

As a writer and assistant editor for WordStorm, Inc., I revised, edited, and wrote news articles, emails, and mail letters. I've also taught multiple lessons on the importance of proofreading, and strategies to improve it.

Writing

As a student-teacher in Massachusetts, I thoroughly examined 90+ students' essays, helping them improve their grammar, diction, vocabulary usage, tone, sentence structure, and format. I tutored after-school, and held many individual conferences to improve my students' writing. My teaching pedagogy includes helping student's find and tune their personal writing voice--individuality and creativity are top priorities for me.
