About Ben

Hello! I am a recent Hampshire College graduate, where I studied Film, Photography, and English. For the last two years I have worked on campus as a tutor in Public Speaking, helping students with speeches, presentations, and general classroom speaking nervousness. I also have experience as a teaching assistant for two film studies courses, helping students with essay writing, research, and video production. I love talking to students about their projects, whether it be an essay, a speech, or a video project!

The most rewarding aspect of a tutoring session for me is getting to know someone and helping them grow and succeed. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I have experience working with Photoshop for 7 years. I have used it for personal, professional, and school projects. I made flyers for my job as a speaking tutor at Hampshire College that advertised our program. I also have experience using Photoshop for digital photography both for personal and school projects. I took a number of photography classes in college and know how to process RAW files.

English

I received a 5 in AP Literature in high school, as well as serving as an editor for my high school yearbook. In college, I took many literature classes and received top grades in those classes. I studied Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Charles Dickens and other Victorian writers. I also took a class on American Short Stories, Anton Chekhov, and literature in the Jazz Age.

Film

In college, I majored in film, focusing both on video production and film studies. I was a teaching assistant for two film studies classes, helping students write & research papers. I took many film studies classes, and received the Five College Film Studies certificate. For my undergraduate thesis project, I produced 90 page project about racism in early U.S. cinema. Additionally, I produced three short experimental found footage video essays for the project.

Photography

I have studied photography in college, and served on a search committee at my school to hire a photography professor. I have experience using Photoshop for digital photography both for personal and school projects. I took a number of photography classes in college and know how to process RAW files.

Public Speaking

As an undergraduate student at Hampshire College, I worked as a Peer Mentor in Speaking for the college's Transformative Speaking Program. I took a class that trained me to be a speaking tutor, where we read the scholarship in the field of speaking and writing centers. In that class I gave speeches, as well as writing essays about tutoring practice. I held over 100 one-on-one sessions with fellow students, tutoring them in speaking – from speeches, powerpoint presentations, and in class discussion. I also attended the Northeast Writing Centers Association Conference, where I co-lead a session about speaking and writing centers working together. I have also lead multiple in-class workshops about powerpoint presentations, classroom discussion dynamics, and speaking skills.

Video Production

In college, I majored in film, focusing both on video production and film studies. I produced a number of films and videos over my college career, both in 16mm b&w film and digital video. I have experience making documentary, experimental, and found footage filmmaking. Additionally, I produced three short experimental found footage video essays for my senior thesis project, along with a 90 page research paper. I have interned at Insignia Films working on films for PBS's American Experience, and I have also interned with experimental filmmaker Abigail Child.

Great lesson!

Ben prepared for the lesson by researching and creating an example of the specific effect I was looking to achieve. He walked through all the steps - pausing to make sure I was familiar with the action - and then let me try - offering advice and suggestions. Before the lesson, Ben replied to emails within minutes. He arrived early for the session and sent an email to let me know where to find him
