About Eric

Hi everyone!

My educational philosophy is that the most important job of a tutor is not to teach facts. It is to teach the student HOW TO LEARN the facts for themselves and how to INCORPORATE those facts into their knowledge base. A strong foundational approach is essential as preparation for the standardized testing that your child will face as they look forward to the college application process. My strong multi-disciplinary background and experience with the college application process lends itself to such an approach.

I have a Bachelor's degree with majors in Physics, Chemistry, and Biochemistry and a minor in Political Science. I have work experience in the fields of biochemistry and immunology, but currently am finishing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on bio-mechanics. So, I definitely use my background in physics and math on a daily basis.

I was a National Merit Scholar, a Singer Scholar, a Foote Fellow, and a UM Graduate Fellow. I received a 2370 on the SAT, a 35 on the ACT, and a 5 in 13 AP classes that I took in high school across the sciences, social sciences, languages, and mathematics. Having lived in Miami for 9 years, I am fluent in conversational Spanish, but I also have a strong foundation in the formal structure of the language as well. I have worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Miami, as well as conducted private tutoring lessons ever since I was a high school student myself.

I have recently moved to Chicago and am excited to begin tutoring in this wonderful new city. I hope to hear from many of you soon so we can arrange to begin working together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I use Algebra every day while completing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Algebra. I believe that establishing a strong fundamental knowledge of Algebra is essential for success in higher level math classes.

Algebra 2

I use Algebra 2 every day while completing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Since I have a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and am finishing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, I have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Algebra 2. I believe that having a strong foundation in Algebra 2 is fundamental to success in more advanced math classes.

Biology

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry and am finishing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, so I have a deep understanding of Biology that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Biology at the high school and college levels and have completed a comprehensive set of course work in the area over the course of my studies. My diverse, strong background in the field allows me to place Biology concepts in a context that helps students understand and remember the material.

Calculus

I use Calculus every day while completing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Since I have a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and am finishing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, I have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Calculus, having tutored it ever since I took AP BC Calculus while I was a junior in high school. While it may seem intimidating at first, my experience allows me to break Calculus down into manageable pieces that my students can understand and employ in solving Calculus problems.

Chemistry

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and laboratory/work experience in the field, so I have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Chemistry at the high school and college levels. While it may seem intimidating at first, my experience allows me to break Chemistry down into manageable pieces and describe Chemistry concepts in terms of real world examples that my students can relate to and understand.

Differential Equations

I am a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering with an undergraduate degree in Physics. I have both taken Differential Equations as well as applied them in many classes and projects at work. I have also tutored numerous individuals in Differential Equations.

Physics

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and use Physics every day while completing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, so I have a deep understanding of the material that allows me to explain the same topic in many different ways to find the approach that best fits my student. I have over a decade of experience tutoring Physics at the high school and college levels. While it may seem intimidating at first, my experience allows me to break complicated Physics problems down into manageable pieces and describe Physics concepts in terms of real world examples that my students can relate to and understand.

Political Science

While I currently work as an engineer, I have a minor in Political Science, specifically in Middle East Relations. Also, I participated in political debates throughout high school and college. Lastly, I am well read on the subject matter.
