About Lane

I have been teaching and tutoring students in colleges, high schools, and elementary schools for more than 15 years in elementary mathematics, algebra, algebra 2, trigonometry, geometry, college algebra, chemistry, physics, biology, and ACT/SAT prep class.

I graduated in 4 years with two bachelor's degrees from University of IL at Chicago (one in math and the other in biology). After I earned the two BS degrees, I pursued the Master's degree in teaching mathematics, and I graduated with honors in 2 years. While I was a graduate student I received awards such as Dean's List Award and Tuition Waiver Awards (i.e the university waived my tuition) for 2 consecutive years because I received all A's and B's in my report card.

I believe that education is the key to success for students. Through my fifteen years of teaching and tutoring experience thus far, I have found the teaching method of facilitating, rather than dictating, to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. Moreover, I believe all students can learn and be educated when there are enough resources, time, and assistance for them. As a tutor, I hope to motivate students in establishing their inner strengths and abilities and discovering what truly inspires them.

One outstanding achievement in my teaching/ tutoring career was when I was able to help an 8th grader to go from an F grade to C+ grade in 2 months of tutoring. My hobbies are reading books, jogging, basketball, tennis, bowling, and volleyball.

I specialize in elementary math (prealgebra) , algebra, geometry, trigonometry, algebra 2, ACT Math, SAT Math. If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would present the information another way, i. e., I would use different teaching styles to help them grasp the concepts.

When you contact me, I will respond rapidly. Feel free to contact me if you have questions prior to scheduling lessons with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have more than 5 years of experience tutoring students in ACT/SAT. Recently I taught 2 SAT prep classes for 4 hours every Saturday for 4 months to high school students.

Algebra 1

I'm a certified math teacher specialized in algebra, geometry and algebra 2.

Algebra 2

I am qualified to tutor in Algebra 2 because I have more than 5 years experience in teaching and tutoring high school students and college students in Algebra 2. Moreover, in order to earn a Master's degree in math, I need to pass calculus (I, II, and III), advanced calculus (I and II), linear algebra, discreet math, and probability and statistics. The subjects just listed are higher level math courses than Algebra 2, and in order to pass those course (which I did), I need to know Algebra 2 very well.

Geometry

I am qualified to tutor in geometry because I have about 10 years experience in teaching geometry to high school students and adults. In addition, I have about 5 years experience in tutoring geometry. Moreover, in order to earn Master's degree in math, I have to pass calculus and advanced calculus, which are higher math courses than geometry.

Prealgebra

I am qualified to tutor prealgebra because I have more than 5 years experience in teaching prealgebra to elementary students ( from 5th grade to 8th grade). Moreover, I currently tutor my son in prealgebra, who is a 7th grader. In addition, in order to earn Master's degree in math, I have to know prealgebra!

Patient, understanding and highly knowledgeable

Lane is doing a great job in getting our son ready for the CPS 8th Grade Algebra Exit Exam. After this first session our son was drilled on his current skills, did practice problems, he was shown how to prepare for certain trick questions that may come up, and he felt even more confident in his math after the 1 1/2 hour session. Great!
