About Alexander

I am a local educator with experience as a professional screenwriter, filmmaker, and most recently as a professor at Northwestern University. I have studied creative writing with the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop in Dublin, IRE and worked closely with art institutions in the midwest.

In the past year, my work was performed at the MCA: Prime Time, staged at Piven Theatre, and one of my short films screened in film festivals across the country, from San Francisco to Boston.

I want to teach my students real world applications for writing, performance, and filmmaking. I will give them concrete techniques for writing a successful screenplay, application essay or cover letter. I can also provide them with the skills they need to write, shoot, edit, and deliver a short film, advertisement, or documentary.

I specialize in editing software such as Avid, Adobe, and Davinci Resolve.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Theatre

I am a local playwright (as well as filmmaker) -- my work has been staged in Chicago, St. Louis, and Edinburgh, Scotland.

My work, in devised collaboration with the ensemble cast a play that received the Amnesty International Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

I studied abroad in London, focusing on theatre, attending performances, writing dramaturgy, and reading the newest plays.

One of my plays won the critic's choice award at the St. Louis Fringe Festival. Another received a staging at the Piven Theatre Workshop. I am currently in development with director Susan Bowen for my new play, who is in the processing of pitching it to local storefront theatres.

Video Production

One of my short films was official selection for Blow Up: Chicago's International Art House Film Festival, it screened at the Boston Underground Film Festival, and San Francisco IndieFest's Another Hole in the Head Film Festival.

I have worked on set for independent films with Full Spectrum Features, Sparkle Motion Pictures, and for a promo for the local PBS station.

I worked on a documentary for KETC, St. Louis's PBS affiliate, about immigration in America. The documentary premiered nationally.

I went to Northwestern University and received a Master's degree in Screenwriting. I was also fortunate enough to work with internationally respected directors on their films. I also took film classes specifically focused on editing software and lighting and cinematography techniques.

I continue to write and direct my own short films (I just submitted one to festivals today).

Writing

I have an MFA from Northwestern University's Writing for the Screen and Stage. I also attended the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop in Ireland. My written work has been staged and published. I also have professional experience as a copywriter for nonprofit organizations such as PBS St. Louis, the NeoFuturists in Chicago, and the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival.

Very Knowledgable and Patient. — I had a problem with a video I produced and could not find the source of the problem...whether it was caused by the camera itself, my settings, lighting, editing, conversion, etc. Alex understood all areas and worked with me to identify the cause and to find a solution. Additionally, he was very pleasant to work with and had a number of great ideas on how to improve production. I cannot recommen ...
