About Deborah

Learning can be a game. As a teacher I specialized in systematic instruction of core areas, using games, memory tricks and repetition. My belief is that all education can be related to the students daily life. Children learn best if they enjoy what they are doing or can see how they can use it today, not years from now.

I taught elementary school math and I've been a volunteer tutor for elementary math and GED math.

I have taught core subjects elementary subjects (k-8) since 1974. I have home schooled several children. I'm familiar with the k-12 program and have assisted parents in the implementation of the program for their children.

Phonics and the building of comprehension skills have always been the basis of all my reading instruction. The most important thing is to foster the love of reading by finding something that the student likes to read, be it recipes, comics books, manga, magazines or even instruction manuals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
