My name is Sarena and I am an elementary educator with 8 years of experience. I have worked with grades K-5th grade. I have taught Kindergarten, First,Third and this upcoming school year I will be teaching Fifth grade.
I am passionate about reading and writing especially helping students grow 4 and 5 levels within a quarter. I am focused on bringing out what a child can do and showing them the steps to get to the next level.
I personally love math! As a student I had a hard time, so I work really hard as a teacher to make math fun, and more about the process than memorizing facts.
I love basketball and cooking! When I am not teaching you can find me chasing my son on the basketball court!
I look forward to supporting your child grow as a learner!
As an undergrad student I worked with a mentor to develop my public speaking skills. I lead professional development at my school and teach my kindergartners public speaking skills per the common core standards.
I have done a lot of research on effective vocabulary instruction and incorporate vocabulary in reading and math.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am able to do this because I have access to study materials via the NWEA MAP Descartes database. Additionally, my expertise in unpacking the common core state standards allows me to create testing material that would be supportive to learners in grades K-6.
