About Robyn

As a licensed teacher working in Chicago, I have seen how easy it is for students to get left behind. Classroom teachers are overworked, given the impossible task of overseeing the academic growth of every student in their care, and in CPS this can mean 35 students or more. As schools become more stressed and overcrowded, the need for supplemental instruction by a tutor who understands the ins-and-outs of Common Core and standardized testing is essential if our young learners are to ever get ahead.

I have spent the last two years working in Chicago public and charter schools, and have developed a teaching philosophy based on structured inquiry-based learning. My goal as an educator is to begin with questions and discover the answers with my students, using standards, objectives, and scaffolding to facilitate our solutions. In addition to teaching, I have a background in writing and editing reading and math curriculum and assessments. I obtained my master's in elementary education from Roosevelt University, and I also have a bachelor's degree in English and creative writing from Loyola University Chicago. Whether your student is struggling with the basics of phonics and decoding, struggling with elementary geometry, or has ambitions of being an esteemed poet, my engaging, organized lessons can help her or him succeed.

I have taught math to grades 1-5 in classroom and small group intervention settings, incorporating differentiated instruction to meet all learners at their developmental levels. I have experience with a variety of curriculum used in schools, including EngageNY, Envision, and GoMath. I am also familiar with programs and apps your student might be using in the classroom, such as STMath, iReady, and IXL. Additionally, I have written K-7 math curriculum for afterschool programming.

I have a bachelor's degree in English and in the past have been a professional proofreader, and so I have expert skills in reading and grammar. I have taught language arts to grades 3-5 in classroom and Response to Intervention settings, and so I have experience differentiating learning so that all learners, regardless of their reading level, can grow. In the past I have used a variety of reading curriculum in the classroom, including EngageNY and Wonders. As a professional writer and editor, I developed K-7 language arts curriculum and assessments for afterschool programming.

My teaching license is for K-9 general education, including all classroom subjects. I possess a master's in elementary education and have classroom and intervention teaching experience in Chicago public and charter schools.

I love teaching children how to read, including taking them through the basic instruction of phonics and decoding. I have experience working with students with learning disabilities including dyslexia.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions about my skills and experience. I look forward to hearing from you and creating a plan for helping your child succeed!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am a licensed elementary teacher. My teacher preparation was based on creating curriculum based on the common core state standards. I have since taught these standards in the classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a professional educator license from the state of Illinois in grades K-9. I have a master's in elementary education and two years of teaching experience.
