About Megan

My educational belief is in every student’s ability and right to learn to the highest standard of accomplishment. A great instructor becomes the catalyst for this level of student achievement. To embody this approach in practice, teachers must not only educate students using standards-based curriculum, but also empower students to become life-long critical learners. By holding students up to these standards and supporting them throughout the process, they gain the determination and self-advocacy tools to control their futures. As such, I am seeking a tutoring position to accelerate your students achievement to reach their strongest level of learning.

After earning my bachelors degree in education, I began a teaching career for students with diverse needs in New York City. This is where I developed my passion for teaching. To grow in my career, I began a teaching residency program in Chicago, where I earned my Masters of Education and started a job with Chicago Public Schools. I believe that enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I bring an excitement to each lesson I do! Through a mix of explicit instruction and content-generalizing games, I ensure that each student is successful and prepared for their educational expectations.

I have taught math classes for 1st through 7th grade using the curriculum of Achievement Network, Saxon Math, and Engage New York. In addition to these yearly plans, I tutor students using data-based instruction in NWEA preparedness.

Being a literacy teacher for students leveled 1st through 6th grades, I am well versed with best practices and critical thinking techniques. Throughout my teaching experience, I have taught students using Leveled Literacy Intervention, Engage New York, Handwriting Without Tears, Words Their Way, and Achievement Network curricula. I use a multi-sensory approach to phonics and phonemic instruction to develop deeper retention of skills. Not only do I work with students to explicitly teach them reading skills, I work to develop a critical thinking approach to comprehension of literacy.

My daily lesson plans as a teacher follow Common Core standards to ensure that my students are able to show their abilities at a national level. I am well versed in the standards in both Math and English for elementary and middle school students.

Through training in Handwriting Without Tears and phonics readiness, I understand the typical development of phonic and phonemic awareness. This allows me to meet students at their level of need, or spiral the curriculum to hit deficit skills and review previous learned patterns. I use a multi-sensory approach to phonics and phonemic instruction to develop deeper retention of skills.

Accelerating your student's learning will give them just the head start they need to begin the next school year with success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

With my LBS1 teaching cerrtification, I am extremely familiar with the Common Core standards. My daily lesson plans as a teacher follow Common Core standards to ensure that my students are able to show their abilities at a national level. I am well versed in the standards in both Math and English for elementary and middle school students and use them to backward plan lessons so students meet the objectives set through the standards.

Through training in Handwriting Without Tears and phonics readiness, I understand the typical development of phonic and phonemic awareness.
