About Brian

I've been teaching high school English/Writing classes for over a decade. My work primarily consists of teaching different levels of high school writing instruction, but I've also taught literature, A.P. English Language and Composition, Film Studies, Journalism, Yearbook, and history. My students have met with success in my own classroom as well as on the ACT and in their college classes. I'm also a published author and have written about music and film fairly extensively.

I've taught in both urban and rural settings and worked with extremely diverse ranges of learning styles and abilities. Teaching/tutoring is best fostered through building relationships alongside learning. An outsider would find my students reading, writing, working cooperatively, discussing, analyzing, all with a positive mindset and a few laughs here and there. My tutoring approach is very similar with special attention to focus upon whatever agreed upon skills are assigned.

I want my students to feel comfortable, reflective upon their own previous experiences, and challenged. As with exercise, the best approach is to "warm up" (relax and stretch those mental muscles before diving into the work), focus on a specific skill or lesson (whatever we both see fit), practice, ask questions, reflect, try again, and determine goals for next time. I understand that every student has a "frustration level," so we'll be careful not too push overboard, while at the same time sticking to our goals. Whenever possible, I will tailor lessons to appeal to student interest as those passions can often provide that extra push when learning about something new or confusing.

Perhaps most importantly, I want students to be lifelong learners. While school may be frustrating to many, we all recognize the importance of sharpening academic skills for whatever future lies beyond.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to achieve your learning goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

I teach high school and work with students every day on proofreading skills. I also do some freelance work, proofreading for a private social work practice.

Writing

I am a published author (non fiction) and am also currently working on two fiction pieces. I also teach writing at both the "college bound" and A.P. level.
