About Thomas

Hi, I'm Tom and I'm from the greater-Chicago area. I am a senior at DePaul University studying Computer Science and Game Development. While programming is exciting to me, one of my other passions is teaching the math and science subjects that accompany Computer Science. I learned very early on that it wasn't the material that was most essential to learning, but it is the proper learning environment that really pushes students to do their best. That is the goal of my tutoring sessions: to create an environment where it's great to ask questions, and perfectly okay to not quite get it at first. My personal approach towards tutoring is to take each task one step at a time. I've noticed that people tend to look at something they're struggling with as one large mess of confusion, rather than individual problems. Solving little problems leads to bigger problems and eventually a thorough understanding of material. Additionally, I enjoy linking the topics in the classroom to the real world. I believe that this creates a more interesting experience for the student knowing that the things they learn are actually applicable in the real world.

My qualifications are that I have been a tutor on various tutoring websites for almost as long as I have been in college. Additionally, my sister had a learning disability growing up, so it took her more time to understand her classes than the other kids in her classes. So, as the eldest in my family and parents who worked, I was responsible for making sure that my sister got the help she needed to go into her classes the next day knowing the material from the prior day. This is my primary motivation for tutoring online now. I really enjoy helping anyone that is having trouble in their classes.

Since I am a Computer Science student, most of my experience is derived from classes taken at DePaul. As such, I have extensive experience in Java, C++, C#, and Python. I have written hundreds of programs over the course of 4 years and have maintained a 3.6 GPA throughout that time.

But Computer Science isn't a singular topic. There are many different facets that need to be learned to understand. Computer Science at its core, is math. Math that can be read by a computer. In order to make a computer do what you want, you need to understand what's going on at an internal level. As such, I have a very Math heavy background, studying up to Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. Because these high level topics are a necessity to my everyday work, it keeps me fresh on all Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus.

I also scored a 35 in Math and a 34 in Science on my ACT so I believe that I have the knowledge necessary to teach to the test. With Standardized testing, like the ACT, it doesn't matter how broad or extensive someone's math knowledge is. It just matters that you have unparallelled experience in the specific topics covered on the ACT.

If you have any questions, or would like to schedule a lesson, feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I received a 35 in Math on my ACT, and as a Computer Science major have kept fresh on math since then.

I have extensive C# experience. This is mainly as the primary programming language used in the Unity Engine. I have taken several classes about C# indirectly through taking classes in Unity.

I have taken several C++ classes, as well as learning C++ through taking classes in Unreal Engine. I have experience in basic C++, data structures, and basic C.

Computer Programming

I am a computer science student at DePaul. I have written hundreds of programs in a variety of languages.

Computer Science

I am a computer science student at DePaul, with a focus in Java.

Discrete Math

I have taken Discrete Math 1 & 2 at my University and received As in both classes. Because I am a computer Science major, I deal with a lot of these topics on a daily basis, so the material is very fresh.

I am a computer Science student at DePaul. Our intro to programming classes are in Python. I have also taken a data gathering class in Python where we used the twitter API to scrape data about specific hashtags and did data analyses on the data we received.

Very Helpful and patient — Thomas was very punctual and very knowledgeable. He helped my daughter with her JAVA programming class and even helped her install the correct program on our home computer. My daughter felt much more confident after her session and I am sure we will use Tom again. ...
