About Scott

I have a PhD in behavioral psychology and spent several years training students to work in educational settings. Behavioral psychology is the study of learning and how our environment and interactions with others influences our approach. I spent years as a professor working with students using techniques based on these principles and designing activities and lessons to train people in their use. As such, the lessons I design involve lots of practice and lots of feedback. To teach reading and writing, I make use of "precision teaching," a method that focuses on identifying the components of a skill and practicing those where the learner is in need of development. For example, to read fluently, a learner needs to be able to sound out consonant blends, recognize whole words, and relate words in sequence. When one can do all three quickly, reading becomes easy. Based on the learners unique needs, we develop exercises and drills to focus on those and practices to improve quickly. Learners develop the skills to track their own progress and practice on their own.

I also use behavioral methods to teach public speaking. I was a moderately successful stand up comedian many years ago (performing as a featured act in clubs in the Western US) and used behavioral training to develop those skills. I was also an active Toastmaster for years during which I provided coaching and training to other club members. As a tutor, I really love seeing students develop confidence in their ability and develop personally as they discover and develop new abilities. I am personable, great with learners of all ages, and have a unique ability to help students uncover their own intrinsic motivation for learning.

I have an undergraduate degree in English literature and in graduate school studied and applied many theories of learning. I have also developed the skills to be a great public speaker using those same principles of learning, and have a passion for training others to be confident and clear in front of groups of people.

I encourage you to contact me if you need help with reading, writing, or public speaking. Contact me so that we can schedule a time that works for both of us.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I was a Toastmaster for five years, during which I regularly critiqued and coached fellow Toastmasters in public speaking.

I have coached dozens of program leaders for Landmark Worldwide in facilitating group workshops and seminars.

I have trained dozens of Masters Students in effectively presenting graduate research to their research committees.

I trained myself to be an effective stand-up comedian using a variety of training techniques.

Writing

With respect to my ability as a writer, my Bachelor's degree is in English Literature and I have numerous peer-reviewed and popular press publications. With respect to my approach as a coach and tutor, I have mentored dozens of M.A. students in research writing and, in my personal time, have coached dozens of individuals in story telling. As a writing tutor, my approach is to evaluate student writing to assess needs, then tailor a program to that individual. Whether those needs be more with basic grammar and sentence structure or broadly organizing ideas, I take a Socratic approach by asking targeted questions that guide the learner to more effective presentation and articulation of their ideas.
