About Kathy

I currently work in an actuarial consulting firm and am pursuing my ASA (Associate of the Society of Actuaries) designation. Outside of work, I'm an avid reader and an amateur musician (I play guitar, piano, and bassoon).

I think it's important for you to know that when I was a kid, I was terrible at math, to the extent that my elementary school teachers assigned extra out-of-class work so I could catch up with the other students. Middle school math classes were a little better, but I still wasn't grasping everything well enough to feel secure. But I kept chipping away at it, and by the time high school geometry rolled around, I had developed a dogged work ethic and a unique way of looking at problems that earned me my first A ever in a math class. I went on to rock the AP calculus exam and graduate from college with a math degree and a Phi Beta Kappa membership. So I understand the struggle that comes with just not "getting it" right away. I also offer techniques for reframing problems and, most importantly, a shining example of what you can achieve when you refuse to give up. Be the pit bull. It's worth it.

After college, I decided to pursue actuarial science and have completed four Society of Actuaries preliminary exams (probability, financial mathematics, life contingencies, and whatever MFE stands for) and the Validation by Educational Experience modules (statistics, corporate finance, and economics).

I have completed four exams toward my ASA (Associate of the Society of Actuaries) designation: exams P, FM, MLC, and MFE. I have also completed all three VEE (validation by educational experience) modules: statistics, corporate finance, and economics.

At work, I coach my junior colleagues in both the day-to-day details of our work and the "bigger picture" risk management concepts that have earned the actuarial profession its high reputation. They tell me I'm a patient, kind, and thorough mentor.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
