About Alan

I love teaching what I'm passionate about. We live in a tech-driven world, and it's more important now than ever to have a good grasp of it. I entered the tech community as an entrepreneur, launching my own startup before writing a line of code. Prior to that, I studied finance and economics here in Chicago and got a job at a top tier financial institution. I had previously worked as a mentor in my programming school, helping students improve their Ruby on Rails and front-end skills, problem solve, and troubleshoot, as well as provide valuable insights regarding the web applications they were building. I want my students to view tech not as a bunch of code on a screen, but how it applies to the real world. Tech isn't used in a bubble, and as such, it shouldn't be created in one. My sessions are structured around not just writing code in Ruby on Rails, HTML, and CSS/Less/Sass, but to write code while considering the full user experience of what they're creating, whether you're founding your own company, working for a tech company, or just want to explore something new.

My goal is to give students a 360° perspective on what they're building, to consider edge-cases, to think about speed and reliability of their code, and to learn not just how to write code, but more importantly how to problem solve. I want my students to feel challenged, to have a desire to find ways to accomplish a task, and to have the resources they need to do the above.

I am generally available after 6pm on M-Th. I can travel to students or tutor online. My base rate is $90/hour. I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your technical and business goals! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have a degree in finance and economics from Loyola University Chicago. Before graduation, I got an internship at UBS Financial Services, Inc. in their wealth management division, working on investment portfolios for high net-worth clients. Although I work in technology now, my passion lies at the intersection of tech and business, and how one needs the other to survive. As lead developer at my current start-up, I work directly with the CEO on business development, making decisions as to where we should take the company, projects as they relate to meeting with investors, and so on.

Computer Programming

I attended a 9-month coding bootcamp where I learned Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, and more. After that, I spent 5 months freelancing and then got my first job as a software engineer. I quickly became lead dev. at the company I worked for, where my role was writing code, testing, scoping out and building features, troubleshooting with the other developers and so on. I currently work at a new company as the lead developer. Upon completing my coding bootcamp, the co-founders took me on board to work as a mentor for future students, where I worked one-on-one helping them learn to code, troubleshoot, etc. My tutoring method isn't just simply giving an answer, since that won't help teach someone to code. Rather, I want to help them work backwards through the problem, write out step by step what they're trying to accomplish, and attack it from both a macro and a micro perspective. My goal is to have students know how to solve problems, not just simply get answers.

Marketing

In the startup I had launched, I had been doing a great deal of marketing and implementing newer techniques that weren't taught at my university. I feel marketing classes have become dated, without enough emphasis placed on tech, such as utilizing Google Analytics, social media marketing, guerilla marketing, and how to differentiate oneself from the pack. My goal is for my students to understand how to market effectively to their target audience, through writing, imagery, effective online posting, analyzing Google Analytics and Trends, SEO (search engine optimization), and more.

Web Design

I currently work at a start-up as the Lead Developer, and a big part of my role is web design. In my web development program, 1/3 of the time was fully dedicated to thinking about web design, and how to incorporate it both from a technical perspective (HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.) and from a UI/UX perspective as well.
