About Julia

Hi there! My name is Julia and I'm thrilled to be able to teach this summer. I'm a recent graduate at Walter Payton College Prep and am studying Government and Public Policy at Dartmouth College in the fall. My interests have always surrounded the humanities, English, and social sciences. I'm a freelance writer, have had two pieces published in the Learning Network for the New York Times, and was the Editor-In-Chief of my school newspaper, The Paw Print. Writing has always been my "thing": either for work or just for myself!

In addition to academics, I've always been drawn to working with fellow students. Within the last year, I spent last summer as a overnight camp counselor and sailing instructor for 8-14 year olds at Camp Seafarer in North Carolina, was the leader of the freshmen mentoring organization at Walter Payton, and developed and taught a semester long public speaking course to to 7th and 8th graders at Salazar and Jenner Elementary. Needless to say, I love teaching and will continue to do so on campus in the fall!

Numbers, first: I scored 36 (out of 36) points on the English section and 35 points on the Reading section of the ACT. As the Editor-in-Chief of my school paper and a freelance journalist, it's my job (literally!) to ensure that my grammar is near perfect.

As a mentor, I'm a big fan of questions: please reach out with any/all that you have. I look forward to possibly working with your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

From a hard-skills standpoint, I earned a 36/36 on the English section of the ACT. More generally, I love to read, write, and edit both personally and professionally. I hope I can transfer my love of the ins and outs of English and rhetoric to you or your student!

ACT Reading

I earned a 35 out of 36 on the ACT reading test in 2015.

English

In terms of "hard skills," I earned a 36/36 on the English section of the ACT in the Spring of 2015. I have written for numerous newspapers including The Mash (branch of the Chicago Tribune), The Paw Print (student newspaper at Walter Payton College Prep) and the New York Times (a guest writer for two pieces in the Learning Network). Additionally, I was the editor-in-chief of the Paw Print in my senior year of high school. I hope that my love of writing, English, and editing will mirror that of your child at the end of our tutoring sessions!

Public Speaking

Public speaking, although oftentimes fear-inducing, is a vital skill for students to learn. This year, I created my own independent study in which I designed and taught a public speaking curriculum to 7th graders at Ruben Salazar Bilingual Center and 8th graders at Jenner Elementary in Chicago, Illinois. The curriculum is based on the textbook that I read, "Public Speaking: The Virtual Text", co-authored by Lisa Schreiber and Morgan Hartranft. My lesson plans incorporated both confidence-building exercises and outlined the steps of persuasive argumentation; both classes will end in two weeks with each student presenting a speech with a topic of their choice.

Reading

From a "hard-skill" standpoint, I earned a 35/36 on the Reading section of the ACT. I hope to help your student enjoy Reading as much as I do!

Writing

Writing has always been my "thing" and thus something I excel at both academically and enjoy to do. In terms of "hard skills", I earned a 36/36 points on the English section of the ACT in the Spring of 2015. Outside of the classroom, I have written for multiple newspapers (The Mash [affiliated with the Chicago Tribune], The Paw Print [student newspaper at Walter Payton College Prep], and the New York Times). Additionally, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the Paw Print as a high school senior and look forward to writing for The Dartmouth in Fall of 2016. I hope that my love for writing is infectious for you/your child.

Great first lesson!

Though it was our first meeting, Julia had really helped me get a very solid start! She payed attention to what I needed help with and made sure to organize the lesson to fit those needs.
