About Ellen

I graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education from Saint Louis University in 2009. Later, I continued my education by getting certified in Elementary Education as well as receiving my ESL endorsement. I have now taught for 7 years teaching elementary (mostly 3rd grade) as well as in an international preschool. The best part of teaching is helping students find their "lightbulbs" when they grasp a challenging concept. My students' dedication and optimistic attitudes inspire me every day!

I have experience tutoring a range of subjects such as early literacy, reading comprehension, elementary math, pre-algebra, algebra, and writing. I love the opportunity to tutor students because I feel that the individualized attention allows me more time to find individual strengths and styles of learning. As I become more familiar with the learner, I enjoy using my creativity and experience to tailor lessons to the student's needs as well as their interests.

When students have difficulty with math, I have found that using hands on manipulatives or games really help. I am constantly researching new ways to teach and introduce concepts to best meet individual learning styles.

One of my passions is writing, and I sincerely enjoy helping others find their own individual writing voice. Whether it is researching for nonfiction, or creating a unique world in a fantasy piece, I can help students feel confident in their writing by providing them with the tools (graphic organizers, mini-lessons, revision practices) they need to complete a well constructed piece of writing.

I have sincerely enjoyed my time teaching and learning from students at the elementary level. I have taught 3rd grade for a total of 5 years, and have learned so many new strategies and tools every year. I enjoy teaching all subjects, but I have a passion for math and writing. One of my favorite aspects about working with students at this level, is being able to cater lessons to their individual personalities.

Tutoring is a great way for a student to find their own success. During the tutoring session, the student will be provided with the opportunity to express where they feel challenged. Throughout the lesson, I will closely monitor their work, to ensure that the student is learning the material correctly, while simultaneously gaining confidence in new skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great with kids, knows her stuff

Ellen is dynamic, wise and patient. She has a very warm, insightful way with kids and intuitively knows what each needs and how each learns. She is truly helping my math-averse fourth grader have fun with math and improve his grasp of the fundamentals. I expect his grades to go up on his next report card, for his anxiety to go way down, and for him to get more confident in school.
