I am a PhD graduate from Northwestern University available to help students of all ages improve their reading and writing skills. For several years, I have been a university instructor, where I am invested in helping all students reach their potentials as critical thinkers. In the classroom and through my assignments, I help students distill key ideas from challenging readings, understand the structure and organization of college-level written work, and express themselves clearly and persuasively through their own writing.

Although I am available to work with students of all ages, I am particularly eager to tutor students who are in high school or college. I would introduce students just entering college to academic writing of the level they may encounter in university classrooms, which would give them a valuable "head start" during the challenging transition from high school to college coursework. I can also provide guidance to help students improve their editing and proofreading skills.

My bachelor's degree is from Cornell, where I graduated summa cum laude. While in college, I taught Critical Reading and Writing SAT prep to individuals as well as small groups, and I am happy to teach standardized test strategies as well. I am able to draw on my experience, while adapting my tutoring strategies to suit the new SAT format, or the ACT.

I often tell my students that reading and writing skills require practice: they improve over time. My strategies for teaching critical reading and writing provide such practice.

I am also happy to tailor lessons to suit a student's own interests. Are you interested in baseball, or pop music, or television? There are texts in each of these areas---and many more---that can be used as the basis for lessons of various levels.

Please contact me for more information. I look forward to hearing from you!

Reviews

Outstanding feedback and support for improving writing skills

Alex is extremely knowledgeable with grammar, sentence structure, and proper citations. He took the time to go through my writing in order to provide constructive feedback for revising and editing. He explains why the revision is necessary so that you can improve your writing. A guaranteed productive tutoring session. I highly recommend him for writing support, especially at the graduate level.
