Bio

I have been a college instructor for five years. I've mainly taught introductory college composition courses; however, I have a strong background in literature. I like to think of my teaching philosophy as a mixture between the Socratic Method and avant-garde theater. I say this because I like to continually question the students until they arrive at the answer I am looking for, rather than directly tell them the answer I’m looking for. At the same time, I like to make analogies through current events and/or developing technologies. For instance, I have used an analogy to explain concise diction in writing by explaining it as “Text” lingo. I have also used things like a very bad Yoda impression to display passive-voice. I feel that this mixture of letting the students arrive at their own answers, and then putting it into a frame of reference, which might be more familiar to them, helps the students conceptualize, visualize, and retain information better.

It is all too common in my profession to stress the erudite, rather than the practical applications and intellectual advantages a student can gain from instruction. I feel that educators often lose sight of the usefulness of language and instead stress that our students memorize a Shakespearian sonnet or be able to wax philosophical about Stephen Dedalus or Moby Dick. We are not speaking the students “English.” I excel at teaching the proper way to think academically through non-traditional means. Blended and multi-modal instruction is what I focus on in my instruction.
