I am a teacher with 25 years of classroom experience. I first received my Professional Educator's License in 1991 from the Illinois State Board of Education. I have renewed my license every 5 years since by fulfilling Illinois License Renewal requirements. I have planned and executed thousands of lessons. I have assessed students following teaching them to determine what students have actually learned and what concepts may need to be retaught.
I have enjoyed success at seeing my students show academic growth every school year and every group of students I have taught. I have taught individuals and small groups when needed in order to remediate deficiencies. Small group instruction and individual instruction is sometimes necessary when certain students have difficulty learning a concept in a whole class setting. That is why tutoring is sometimes essential for certain students. I am looking forward to the change from large class instruction to one-on-one tutoring.
I have always enjoyed teaching Math because it has definite rules unlike the English Language. Since Math has definitive rules it can be taught in a logical sequence that is often easier for students to grasp than it is for students to grasp Reading skills. One skill in Math builds upon another until the whole picture can be seen clearly by the student. That is what makes me a good Math Tutor.
Please feel free to contact me to schedule an appointment. You will find me friendly and encouraging. I am also patient and kind. I don't believe in looking down on someone just because they have difficulty grasping a concept that their teacher has tried to teach them. Some students just need to have a concept explained in a different way or perhaps just the ability to ask questions in a private setting where you are not in front of the whole class can be enough for a student to understand difficult concepts that they might not be able to grasp in a large class setting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor students in Common Core because I was trained in Common Core through Professional Development sessions while I was teaching in Chicago Public Schools. Also, I taught Common Core to students for three school years from 2012-2015. While teaching classrooms full of students in Common Core I had to also tutor some individuals who needed remediation. The data showed improvement in over 80% of individual's grades through tutoring.
I am qualified to tutor Elementary K-6th because have held a Type 03 K-9 Self-Contained Illinois Professional Educators License since 1991. I have taught each grade level for entire years and I have received Superior and Excellent Ratings throughout the years. In the course of teaching entire classrooms full of students I have tutored hundreds of individual students.
I am qualified to tutor students in Phonics because my last three years teaching was at the First and Second Grade level where Phonics Skills are specifically taught. In addition, in those three school years teachers were trained to teach Phonics specifically using a highly interactive system of teaching Phonics using a method of teaching Phonics developed by Heggerty. So, not only did I have to teach Phonics using the Heggerty method but I also had to tutor individuals who needed remediation.
One reason I can teach study skills to students is because I have personally used study skills to achieve a 3.95 GPA at the Graduate level. Another reason I am qualified to teach study skills is because I have actively taught study skills to my students during my 25 years of teaching. I also tutored study skills to individual students in my classroom. Some important study skills I have taught are note taking, highlighting, research, and the use of mnemonic devices.
Another reason I am qualified to teach study skills to others is because I have been an Elementary level educator for the last 25 years and have kept my own study skills sharp. Also, one of the requirements for teachers in their job description is to produce lesson plans to determine what should be taught at any given time of the day or week. This type of detail requires a deep level of coordination of thought processes and execution of lesson plans. Finally, teaching requires educators to be on-task at all times. Staying on-task is a very important study skill and good educators are masters of staying on-task. Therefore I am very qualified to teach study skills because I have always achieved good grades myself, as a teacher for 25 years I have kept my study skills sharp, and as a teacher it has always been a vital part of my job description to stay on-task.
